Optus network prepares for Queensland cyclone Yasi

Optus Network engineers continue to closely monitor Cyclone Yasi in Far North Queensland and are preparing to respond to any impact to the Optus Network, according to Australia's second-largest telecommunications carrier.

As of 11:00am this morning, the Optus Open Mobile Network is unaffected and continues to provide services across Queensland, the telco said.

The Optus Reef Network which provides transmission for voice and data services between Brisbane and Cairns is also currently unaffected.

The company said its team has already begun moving a number of resources towards the areas likely to be impacted. This includes utilising our Satellite infrastructure via a portable satellite base station as well as additional power generators and spare parts that can be used to restore any damaged infrastructure.

Optus said it continues to work closely with Emergency Service organisations to ensure rapid response to any network related incidents.

It will also be making available its portable Internet Kiosk and Customer Service Trailer to provide free communication services for the local community to keep in touch with family and friends. These facilities include satellite phones for free voice calls and laptop computers with free internet access.

There will also be mobile phone chargers within the Customer Service Trailer so people can recharge their phones in the event of power outages. These facilities will be moved to the most appropriate locations as the situation develops.

Solomon Islands and Vanuatu have missed the worst of Cyclone Yasi, which is now headed for the north eastern Australian coastline.

A report from Fiji Bureau of Metrology says while the cyclone has passed, heavy rain and fair to moderate winds are now hitting the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

The wet weather is also headed for Tuvalu.

In PNG, Port Moresby residents have been warned of strong residual winds from Yasi.

Air Niugini has advised of possible disruptions to its services between Port Moresby and Cairns on Wednesday and Thursday.
