SAO PAULO — On and off the field, former Brazil star Socrates stood out above the rest.
His elegant style and his deep involvement with politics made him a unique figure in Brazilian soccer, setting him apart from the players of his time and even of today.
He was mostly known for captaining Brazil at the 1982 World Cup, regarded by many as the best team ever not to win football's showcase tournament.
But he was also widely known for his heavy drinking, which he publicly admitted caused the health problems which eventually helped lead to his death on Sunday.
The Albert Einstein hospital said in a statement that Socrates died of septic shock at 4:30 a.m. Brazilian time (0630 GMT). He was 57.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said Brazil lost "one of its most cherished sons."
"On the field, with his talent and sophisticated touches, he was a genius," she said in a statement. "Off the field, ... he was active politically, concerned with his people and his country."
Former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also expressed his sadness for the loss.
"Socrates' generous contribution to Corinthians, to football and to the Brazilian society will never be forgotten," said Silva, an outspoken fan of Corinthians, the club where Socrates thrived in the 1980s.

Socrates had been rushed to the hospital a few days ago and had been in critical condition in an intensive care unit with an intestinal infection. He was breathing with the help of a ventilator.
It was the third time in four months that he was hospitalized and placed in intensive care, most recently in September. The first two times he was admitted for a hemorrhage caused by high pressure in the vein that carries blood from the digestive system to the liver.
Socrates never denied his fondness for drinking from the time he was a player in the 1980s, but said he stopped drinking earlier this year after his stints in the hospital.
"Socrates seemed like a player from another era," former Italy forward Paolo Rossi told the ANSA news agency. "You couldn't place him in any category – on the pitch and even more so off it. Everyone knew about his degree in medicine and he had a lot of cultural and social interests as well. He was unique from every point of view."
Indeed, Socrates was like no other on and off the field. He became a doctor after retiring from football and later became a popular TV commentator and columnist, always with unique and controversial opinions.
Since his playing days, Socrates never kept his political ideas to himself and often wrote about the subject in his columns. Known as Dr. Socrates because of his practice of medicine, he was constantly in demand from local media for interviews on varied subjects.
While with Corinthians, Socrates spearheaded a movement called the Corinthians Democracy, in which players protested against the long periods of confinement required by the club before matches. It quickly became a broader protest that coincided with Brazil's fight to overturn a military regime in the 1980s.
The clever, tall full-bearded playmaker also was a member of the Brazilian squad in 1986 in Mexico, but it was in 1982 in Spain that he made history with Brazil, which is known to have had one of the greatest teams in World Cup history but failed to win the trophy. With players like Zico and Falcao, it fell to Italy 3-2 in the second round despite needing only a draw to advance to the semifinals.
"He was a very dynamic player with a sublime foot but most of all great intelligence," added Rossi, who scored a memorable hat trick in that match against Brazil. "Along with Zico and Falcao he was the symbol of that Brazil squad.
Zico said he was honored to have been Socrates' friend and teammate.
"He was a spectacular guy," Zico told the website GloboEsporte.com. "As a player, there is not much to say, he was one of the best that I ever played with. His intelligence was unique, you always expected something good out of him."
Dozens of Brazilian footballers expressed their sadness on Twitter moments after Socrates' death was announced.
"Sad start to the day," retired Brazil striker Ronaldo wrote. "Rest in peace Dr. Socrates."
Former Brazil and Barcelona playmaker Rivaldo added on his Twitter page: "Sad to wake up and find out that Socrates has died."
Reaction came from those outside of football, too, including three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten and three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves.
"Great guy," Castroneves tweeted. "A Brazilian who will be greatly missed."
NBA player Steve Nash called Socrates a "legend."
"RIP Socrates," the Phoenix Suns' point guard tweeted. "Fascinated by him as a kid. Brazilian World Cup Legend. Playmaker. Goal scorer. Doctor. Philosopher."
The Brazilian football federation said the final round of the Brazilian league on Sunday will be played in Socrates' honor. All matches will be preceded by a minute of silence. Corinthians, the team that featured Socrates at the height of his career, needs a draw against rival Palmeiras to win the title. Corinthians' main fan group said it will honor its former star throughout the day.
Fiorentina, another of Socrates' former clubs, held a minute of silence and players wore black armbands in his honor in Sunday's Italian league match with Roma.
Socrates wrote a series of columns for The Associated Press during the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, expressing his views on all aspects of the tournament, including economic and political issues in Latin America.
"It's not just about the game itself," Socrates said before the competition began. "Before anything, (football) is a psychological battle, the human aspect plays a significant role."
Socrates, whose full name is Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, also played for Flamengo and Santos.
Socrates was included in FIFA's list of the best 125 living soccer players in the world, a list compiled by countryman Pele. Socrates played 63 matches with the national team, scoring 25 goals.
He was known for his great vision on the field. Always clever with the ball at his feet, his trademark move was the back-heel pass, and he set up and scored many goals with it throughout his career.
Socrates briefly coached and played for Garforth Town in England in 2004.
Socrates' younger brother Rai was another great Brazilian midfielder, and he helped Brazil win the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
Funeral services will take place in his home town of Ribeirao Preto, in the interior of Sao Paulo state.
He is survived by his wife and six children.

O ídolo do Corinthians, estava internado desde a última quinta-feira na UTI (Unidade de Terapia Intensiva) do hospital Albert Einsten, na zona sul de São Paulo, após dar entrada com quadro de infecção intestinal.
Sócrates, sua mulher e um amigo haviam se sentido mal na noite de quinta-feira (1º) após comerem em um evento.
Segundo o jornalista Juca Kfouri, colunista da Folha, um prato de estrogonofe contaminado com uma bactéria foi o responsável por desencadear a internação do ex-jogador.
Sócrates já esteve internado outras duas vezes entre agosto e setembro, também na UTI, por conta de hemorragias digestivas.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - O ex-jogador de futebol Sócrates faleceu na madrugada de domingo, aos 57 anos, em São Paulo, informou o hospital Albert Einstein, onde ele estava internado há três dias.
O ex-jogador morreu às 4h30, em consequência a um choque séptico, de acordo com nota do hospital.
Sócrates era considerado ícone do futebol ofensivo do Brasil na Copa do Mundo de 1982 e um dos idealizadores do movimento que ficou conhecido como Democracia Corinthiana.
A Confederação Brasileira de Futebol manifestou pesar pela morte do atleta e informou que os jogos da última rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, que serão disputados neste domingo, terão a observância de um minuto de silêncio em homenagem a Sócrates.
O Corinthians, time que o ex-jogador se destacou, pode ser campeão nacional neste domingo.
O time paulista lamentou a morte de Sócrates e fez uma homenagem ao atleta.
"Obrigado pelos lindos gols, pelos toques geniais, pelo futebol magistral que só Sócrates tinha", disse um comunicado do clube em seu site na Internet.
Sócrates disputou 297 jogos com a camisa corinthiana, marcou 172 gols e venceu três Campeonatos Paulistas pelo time, em 1979, 1982 e 1983.

O velório e o enterro do ex-jogador Sócrates, 57 anos, acontecerá na cidade de Ribeirão Preto, onde ele iniciou sua trajetória no futebol, na equipe do Botafogo. O corpo do ídolo corintiano já deixou São Paulo e chega à cidade do interior paulista às 13h, onde será velado no Cemitério de Campo Bom. O enterro de Sócrates está previsto para acontecer minutos antes do início da rodada final do Campeonato Brasileiro, que pode ter o Corinthians como campeão - o time alvinegro disputa o título com o Vasco.
O ex-jogador não resistiu a terceira internação em cerca de quatro meses e morreu nesta madrugada de domingo, em São Paulo. O Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, local onde o ídolo corintiano estava internado desde a noite da última quinta-feira, confirmou a notícia por intermédio de boletim médico emitido às 5h30 (de Brasília).
Ainda segundo o hospital, o ex-jogador morreu às 4h30 em consequência a um choque séptico (infecção generalizada causada por bactéria). Natural de Belém, no Pará, Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira deixa a mulher, Kátia, e seis filhos.
Essa havia sido a terceira vez que o ex-meia foi internado nos últimos quatro meses, sendo as duas anteriores por hemorragia digestiva decorrente do consumo prolongado de álcool.
Durante a primeira internação, em agosto deste ano, o ex-atleta ficou na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) do hospital por nove dias. Chegou a ser submetido a uma cirurgia que teve sucesso, permitindo a recuperação. Após a primeira internação, Sócrates afirmou que o susto fez com que ele mudasse de atitude em relação à bebida.
No dia 5 de setembro voltou a ser internado devido a uma crise de cirrose hepática que incluiu um sangramento no esôfago. Permaneceu no hospital por 17 dias, e recebeu alta para continuar o tratamento em casa. Após nova internação, o ex-atleta assumiu ter feito escolhas erradas em sua vida e agradeceu o apoio das pessoas que torceram e rezaram por ele no momento em que estava hospitalizado.
Sócrates foi um dos maiores craques da história do futebol brasileiro. Ídolo do Corinthians, ele defendeu o clube alvinegro entre 1978 e 1984. Meia de habilidade, o paraense iniciou a carreira no Botafogo-SP na década de 70. Foi um dos principais astros da badalada Seleção Brasileira da Copa do Mundo de 1982, eliminada pela Itália de Paolo Rossi.

O Corinthians tirou um pouco o foco e a concentração no clássico decisivo contra o Palmeiras para prestar uma homenagem a um dos seus maiores ídolos. A morte do ex-jogador Sócrates rendeu uma homenagem especial no site do clube alvinegro, que mostra estar de luto em sua página inicial, com apenas uma foto do craque com as datas de nascimento e morte do ex-meia.
Relembrando a história de Sócrates no time alvinegro, o site lamenta iniciar o dia que pode marcar o quinto título brasileiro com uma notícia tão triste. "Hoje, que seria um dia apenas de alegria pela decisão do Brasileirão, começou triste para o futebol brasileiro, principalmente para os corinthianos", diz a nota.
Na mensagem, o clube ainda agradece o ex-jogador por todos os momentos de alegria que Sócrates deu aos torcedores corintianos. "Obrigado pelos lindos gols, pelos toques geniais, pelo futebol magistral que só Sócrates tinha. Obrigado, Doutor!".
O clube ainda não divulgou se alguma homenagem será feita ao ex-jogador, antes do início da partida diante do Palmeiras, neste domingo, às 17h, no Estádio do Pacaembu. Formado em medicina na Universidade de São Paulo (USP) em Ribeirão Preto, Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira iniciou a carreira de jogador de futebol no Botafogo-SP, clube o qual também revelou o irmão do ex-jogador Raí, campeão do mundo em 1992 e 1993 pelo São Paulo, no ano de 1974, depois de terminar o curso de graduação.
Com a camisa tricolor no interior, Sócrates mostrou um enorme talento, especialmente na troca de passes. Sem muita velocidade e explosão, o ex-meio-campista notabilizou o toque de calcanhar e a categoria com a bola nos pés. No Botafogo-SP, a principal campanha ocorreu em 1977, quando terminou como artilheiro da competição.
A boa passagem durante os quatro anos pelo clube do interior rendeu a transferência para o clube do Parque São Jorge no ano de 1978, quando se firmou no cenário nacional, conquistando espaço, inclusive, na Seleção Brasileira. Com a camisa alvinegra, o "Doutor", como ficou conhecido no mundo do futebol por conta da formação acadêmica, disputou 298 jogos e assinalou 172 gols - ocupa a oitava colocação no ranking de artilheiros da história do clube. Além das conquistas esportivas com o Corinthians, Sócrates também teve um papel fundamental na política do clube, atingindo até um nível nacional. O ex-meio-campista acabou sendo um dos líderes da Democracia Corintiana, um movimento de cunho ideológico que transformou o ambiente normal do dia a dia de um clube. Os jogadores, anteriormente submissos às decisões da comissão técnica, passaram a também participar das decisões, como em caso de concentrações, viagens, entre outros.
As atitudes da equipe modificaram a hierarquia dentro do Corinthians. Sob o período da democracia, o voto do presidente em uma decisão interna teria o mesmo peso da opção de um roupeiro. Com tamanha politização fora dos gramados, o ex-jogador se tornou um símbolo, inclusive, da luta contra o regime militar, que acabou abolida no País no ano de 1985.
O movimento criado internamente no clube acabou transferido para o público, especialmente quando o Corinthians vestiu uma camisa com o "patrocínio" das "Diretas Já", variando para frases como "Dia 15, vote", por conta da eleição direta para o governo de São Paulo, e "Eu quero votar para presidente".
Um dos atletas mais influentes dentro do grupo, Sócrates nunca escondeu a insatisfação em relação à ditadura, e externava a liderança dentro da equipe com opiniões fortes em um dos períodos mais tensos da história recente brasileira.
Tal movimento não atrapalhou o desempenho da equipe alvinegra dentro dos gramados. Durante o período da "Democracia", o Corinthians venceu o bicampeonato paulista (1982 e 1983), em uma das formações mais exaltadas pela torcida. O desempenho de Sócrates, inclusive, rendeu ao meio-campista a convocação para a Copa do Mundo de 1982, quando o Brasil perdeu para a Itália nas quartas de final.
Dono de um estilo elegante dentro de campo, Sócrates deixou o Corinthians no ano de 1984 e se transferiu para a Fiorentina, da Itália. No futebol europeu, o ex-jogador não apresentou o mesmo nível de jogo, e retornou ao País um ano depois para defender o Flamengo. No Rio de Janeiro, ele acabou convocado para a Copa do Mundo de 1986.
No Mundial do México, Sócrates ficou marcado por errar a penalidade na disputa por pênaltis contra a França, nas quartas de final. Eliminado com o time nacional, o ex-meio-campista perdeu espaço no elenco. Antes de encerrar a carreira, o "Doutor" ainda vestiu a camisa do Santos e do Botafogo de Ribeirão Preto.
Em 2004, o carismático médico-jogador ainda "voltou" aos gramados. Aos 50 anos de idade, Sócrates acabou contratado pelo Garforth Town, uma equipe semi-profissional do norte da Inglaterra. Com um contrato de um mês, o ex-atleta da Seleção Brasileira atuou por menos de 15 minutos, em partida contra Tadcaster Albion, por um campeonato regional.
Apesar da aposentadoria e do estilo de vida do "momento", como declarou no último dia 19 de agosto o amigo e jornalista Juca Kfouri, Sócrates continuou perto do futebol. O ex-jogador trabalhou como articulista na revista Carta Capital, como comentarista no programa Cartão Verde, da TV Cultura, e foi blogueiro do Terra durante a Copa do Mundo de 2010, na África do Sul.

A morte do ex-jogador Sócrates, aos 57 anos, anunciada durante a madrugada deste domingo (4), surpreendeu os torcedores do Corinthians que vivem em São Paulo e que aguardam pela partida com o Palmeiras, às 17h, que será realizada no estádio do Pacaembu, pela última rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro.
O ex-craque do Timão estava internado no hospital Albert Einstein, na zona sul da capital paulista, e morreu em decorrência de um choque séptico às 4h30. Ele estava internado no hospital desde quinta-feira (1º) na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI).

O eletricista Paulo da Silva, 38 anos, morador de Uberlândia, veio até São Paulo para tentar comprar ingresso para a partida deste domingo quando foi avisado pela reportagem do G1 sobre a morte do ex-jogador. “Confesso que meu até um calafrio na hora. Fico triste com uma notícia dessa”, afirma.
No Parque do Ibirapuera, na zona sul da capital, outros torcedores do Corinthians também lamentaram a perda. Segundo Danilo Chaccur, 45 anos, que passeava pelo local com a mulher e filha, a morte de Sócrates será mais uma motivação para os jogadores do Timão na partida desta tarde. “Para os jogadores vai ser um impulso, agora para a torcida é certo que haverá uma grande comoção. O Sócrates não era ídolo apenas dos corinthianos, mas também dos brasileiros, já que ele vestiu a camisa da Seleção Brasileira”, afirma.
O técnico de manutenção Fábio Araújo, 37 anos, disse estar triste pela morte do ex-jogador e explica que uma vitória do Corinthians sobre o Palmeiras seria uma homenagem. “Foi um grande craque”, disse.

Problemas de saúde
O ex-jogador estava em coma induzido e respirava com a ajuda de aparelhos. Segundo boletim médico divulgado neste sábado (3), o quadro dele já era grave. Esta foi a terceira vez este ano que o ex-atleta e ídolo do Corinthians foi internado. Nas duas ocasiões anteriores, ele passou por tratamento para conter uma hemorragia digestiva, causada pelo consumo prolongado de álcool.
Em sua última internação no mesmo hospital, dia 5 de setembro, Sócrates ficou na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) e precisou da ajuda de aparelhos para respirar. Recuperado, recebeu alta médica dia 22. Anteriormente, ele havia ficado nove dias internado, e saiu no dia 27 de agosto. Segundo a mulher de Sócrates, o ex-jogador teve uma infecção no intestino causada por uma bactéria.
De acordo com a família do jogador, o corpo dele será levado para Ribeirão Preto. A previsão de chegada é às 13h. Depois, será realizado o velório, e o enterro está marcado para as 17h deste domingo.
Perfil
Sócrates era o mais velho de seis irmãos – o ex-jogador Raí é um deles -, e teve seis filhos. Ele começou sua carreira em Ribeirão Preto, no interior de São Paulo. Por causa da faculdade de medicina, que cursava na Universidade de São Paulo (USP), ele quase não treinava.
Em 1978 ele foi para o Corinthians, onde se consagrou como ídolo. Já era médico formado e ganhou da torcida o apelido de Doutor. Com o time, foi bicampeão paulista em 1982 e 1983.
O jogador participou de duas Copas do Mundo pela Seleção Brasileira. Em 1982, foi capitão. Depois de uma breve passagem pelo Fiorentina, da Itália, atuou ainda no Flamengo e no Santos.
Sócrates também era politizado. Ele participou da campanha pelas Diretas Já, e em 1984 foi um dos principais idealizadores da Democracia Corintiana, que reivindicava para os jogadores mais liberdade e mais influência nas decisões administrativas do clube.

O ex-jogador Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Sousa Vieira de Oliveira, ídolo do futebol nacional e internacional, não concordava com a exportação de jogadores para times do exterior. A afirmação é de seu amigo Bueno, cantor e compositor, com quem o craque gravou um CD em 1.999.

“O Sócrates dizia sempre que o Brasil deveria exportar suas artes e não seus artistas. Ele fez essa referência quando Ronaldinho Gaúcho foi vendido e, atualmente, ele elogia o Santos por conseguir segurar o Neymar no time brasileiro”, afirma.
De acordo com Bueno, o grande sonho do craque era ajudar os menos favorecidos. “Esse sonho ele não conseguiu realizar. Sócrates tinha um projeto de levar um ônibus com um consultório móvel até os bairros mais pobres. Uma vez, ele me disse que uma barraca de lona serviria”.
Último Pedido
O último pedido do Doutor ao amigo Bueno foi que ele fizesse gengibre curtido. “Ele me pediu para fazer gengibre fresca curtida há uns três meses. Eu fiz, mas ele não veio buscar. Não deu tempo”.
Em poucas palavras, Bueno definiu a morte de Sócrates. “Perdi meu melhor amigo. Um ser humano preocupado com os mais humildes”.
Bebida
Bueno disse que Sócrates estava sem ingerir bebidas alcoólicas. “Sua última recaída foi há uns 6 meses em Cuba, a partir daí ele só piorou”.
Internação
Sócrates estava internado deste quinta-feira (1) à noite, depois de ter se sentido mal durante o jantar. O quadro clínico dele chegou a apresentar leve melhora neste sábado, graças a um antibiótico mais potente, que fez regredir o quadro de infecção intestinal.
Mas os médicos já vinham alertando que o caso dele era grave – Sócrates estava sedado na UTI, respirando por aparelhos e passando por tratamento dialítico, que consiste na remoção do excesso de líquidos e substâncias prejudiciais acumuladas no organismo do paciente renal crônico. A expectativa era que ele permanecesse em observação por pelo menos 72 horas.
O ex-jogador foi internado com uma infecção intestinal causada por uma bactéria. Ele começou a se sentir mal depois de comer estrogonofe no jantar. Não foi confirmado pelos médicos, porém, que tenha sido essa a causa da internação.
Esta tinha sido a terceira internação de Sócrates nos últimos quatro meses. As duas internações anteriores foram para tratar de uma hemorragia digestiva, causada pelo consumo prolongado de álcool.

Em sua coluna na revista Carta Capital que chega às bancas de todo o Brasil nesta semana, o Doutor questiona a questão ambiental relacionada à Copa do Mundo de 2014.

“O abastecimento de água e de energia nos estádios e centros de imprensa tem sido motivo de poucas discussões, como se fosse tema secundário. Pelo contrário, é fundamental para se evitarem desperdícios e emissão de gás e fuligem no caso de utilização de diesel para viabilizar a transmissão do evento”, escreveu Sócrates.

“Lixo! Será que algum dos que possuem poder de decisão para o mundial pensou em como ratar e manipular o lixo produzido?”, questiona o ex-jogador. “Acredito que não”, ele mesmo responde.

Sócrates conclui o texto com uma triste constatação. Ele classifica o trabalho de organização da Copa como uma farra – e vai além. “Uma inconsequência sem limites das instituições que delas deveriam cuidar”, disse.

Sócrates morreu na madrugada deste domingo, aos 57 anos, vítima de uma infecção generalizada.

Pelo que fez em campo, Sócrates integra um grupo pequeno, o dos gigantes do futebol brasileiro. Pela capacidade de reflexão sobre o seu ofício, ocupa um lugar único. Nenhum atleta brasileiro foi capaz de pensar sobre os diferentes aspectos do esporte, questionar os seus problemas e propor soluções com a sua coragem e inteligência.
Some-se a isso, Sócrates construiu uma imagem pública fascinante. O “antiatleta”, como ele dizia, sempre fumou e bebeu, era um iconoclasta, sem papas na língua, tinha prazer em chocar os mais conservadores com seu humor refinado e era de uma simpatia a toda prova.
Essa raríssima combinação – gigante em campo, gênio na tribuna, carismático no dia-a-dia – obrigou muita gente a engolir Sócrates a contragosto. Na verdade, num país com a estrutura esportiva pré-histórica que ainda tem o Brasil, Sócrates sempre foi um incômodo para quem, de fato, manda  – dirigentes, políticos e empresários ocupados exclusivamente com os seus próprios interesses e negócios.
Além da tristeza gigante pela morte tão precoce de Sócrates, sinto muito também por achar que as principais batalhas que enfrentou ainda estão muito longe de ter um desfecho positivo. Mas não são batalhas perdidas. Sua voz será sempre lembrada por aqueles que sonham com um mundo esportivo mais justo.

Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56 today, and the report came in at 4:35 pm PDT. All over the world very iconic people are paying their respects, and we have gathered a few. Jobs is survived by wife, Laurene, and three children. It’s as sad as can be, and a time for everyone to say goodbye.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

Visionary Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs has died, aged 56.
Jobs, who co-founded the technology company in 1976 with childhood friend Steve Wozniak, has lost his eight year battle with pancreatic cancer, Apple confirmed this evening.
The mastermind behind the iPhone, iPod and iMac, and dozens of other devices, Jobs is remembered for revolutionizing the way we communicate today.

Jobs died in Palo Alto, California on Wednesday evening. He had been fighting the disease publicly since 2004.
His family said in a statement Jobs 'died peacefully today surrounded by his family... We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.'
Steve Jobs was the biological son of Joanne Schieble and Syrian Abdulfattah ‘John’ Jandali, 23-year-old students at the University of Wisconsin. Within months of giving up their baby son, the pair got married and had a daughter, Mona Simpson, whom he did not meet until he was an adult. Simpson later wrote a book based on their relationship, called 'A Regular Guy'.

The boy was named by his adoptive parents, Paul and Clara Jobs, a working-class couple from Santa Clara County, near San Francisco. They lived in the same house in Mountain View where their son would later hand-build the first Apple computers.
Upon graduation from high school, Jobs went to Reed College in Portland, Oregon – and lasted precisely one term, unable to stick to rigid academia. Instead, he focused on the Homebrew Computer Club and became a technician at the videogame company Atari; the work paid for a philosophical odyssey to India that saw him returning with his head shaved, wearing Indian robes and having taken LSD. Just two years later, the unlikely combination of countercultural thinking and a visionary passion for technology led to the creation of Apple Computer.

It was at a gathering of the Homebrew Computer Club that Steve Wozniak, a computer genius who worked on calculators at Hewlett-Packard, unveiled something genuinely revolutionary. It was a beige motherboard containing 30 or so silicon chips soldered together, by Wozniak, outside of his working hours at Hewlett-Packard. Its 'PROM' chips stored a string of ones and zeros, laboriously typed in by hand, again by Wozniak. The 'monitor' programme he had written enabled you to type a letter on a computer keyboard and see it appear on a screen in front of you. This was the first computer in history that could perform this feat.
The unveiling of what was to become the company's first product, the 'Apple I' machine released in 1976 that resulted from Wozniak’s prototype were assembled in Jobs’ garage.
To pay for the first circuit boards, Jobs sold his VW van for $250, and Wozniak sold his Hewlett-Packard calculator for $500.
The machines the pair went on to sell were far from what we imagine as a computer today – to make them work, you had to wire in a keyboard and connect a monitor yourself. At the time, the idea that 'personal computing' would be profitable seemed almost laughable. 

Yet in 1977, the Apple II was unveiled - a machine that would revolutionise home computing and become the first truly consumer-friendly PC.
As the company grew rapidly, history seemed to be repeating itself in Jobs' personal life. At the age of 23, just like his biological parents, Jobs had a child, Lisa, with his girlfriend Chrisann Brennan, which he struggled to accept. Already with millions in the bank, he’s said to have declared in a court document that he couldn’t be Lisa’s father as he was 'infertile'. Eventually he did acknowledge paternity of Lisa, but went on to marry organic-foods businesswoman Laurene Powell, nine years his junior, at a wedding in 1991 presided over by Zen Buddhist monk Kobun Chino. The couple would have three children together, a son, Reed, born in September 1991, followed by daughters Erin in August 1995 and Eve in 1998.

Meanwhile, as Apple grew in the early Eighties, Jobs began another odyssey: trawling the globe for the best engineers, designers, software developers and marketing people capable of turning his vision into reality.
Jobs lured marketing guru John Sculley from Pepsi in 1983 to become Apple’s CEO. A year later, Apple started its think-big approach with an unheard-of $900,000 budget Ridley Scott-directed Super Bowl television commercial entitled ‘1984’. Two days later an emotional Jobs introduced the Macintosh, the first successful computer with a graphical user interface.

The Jobs-Sculley relationship went downhill during the industry-wide sales decline at the end of 1984. Within months Jobs was out of his own company following a boardroom power struggle but he was far from finished with the company.
Jobs started NeXT to develop computer hardware and software. And in 1986, he bought what would become  Pixar animation for $5million, the studio that went on to produce blockbusters such as Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.  
A decade later Apple bought NeXT for $429million, and soon afterwards appointed Jobs interim CEO. He was back where he wanted to be. Jobs rid the company of projects he didn’t rate. Crucially, he canned dozens of different beige-coloured Apples and replaced them with a single unit, the iMac G3, in vivid 'Bondi Blue' and later in other colours that turned computers from functional to fashionable; 3.7million of the computers, created by visionary British designer Jonathan Ive, were sold worldwide.
During his tenure at Apple, Jobs oversaw every detail - from which prototypes to develop to the packaging of products, and even hiring the chefs to work at Apple’s gleaming, postmodern headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California. He was such a fixture, in fact, that in January, 2009, after announcing his second medical leave, Apple stock dropped to $78.20 per share. The stock recovered to become one of the most successful on Wall Street.
Industry watchers called Jobs a master innovator - changing the worlds of computing, recorded music and communications.

In 2001, the iPod turned MP3 players from a geek obsession into a mass-market phenomenon. And in 2003, the iTunes Music Store proved that online music sales could be a viable business.
In 2007, he transformed the cell phone with Apple's iPhone, known for its touch screen, it operates as a handheld computer complete as music player, messaging device.
By 2010, the iPad was unveiled a sleek tablet computer with a touch screen and almost no physical buttons. It could be used for almost anything software designers could conceive, from watching movies to taking pictures to leafing through a virtual book.
Jobs was listed in March as 109th on the Forbes list of the world's billionaires, with a net worth of about $8.3billion. After selling Pixar animation studios to The Walt Disney Company in 2006, and became a Disney board member.
But during much of his final years on the rise, Jobs was embattled with failing health. In 2004, he beat back an unusual form of pancreatic cancer, and in 2009 he was forced to get a liver transplant. He took three medical leaves from Apple.

Finally, he announced on August 24, 2011 that he was stepping down as Apple's chief executive. 
Though his resignation letter was short and to the point, it was obviously full of emotion as he thanked 'the best friends he made for life' at the billion dollar company.
Jobs wrote to the Apple board of directors in his letter of resignation: 'I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.'
Jobs was subsequently replaced by former Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook.
A statement by Apple's board released on the evening of his death read:'We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.
'Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.
'His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.
In addition to his daughter, Lisa, Jobs is survived by his wife, Laurene Powell, and their three children: Reed Paul, Erin Sienna and Eve.

He will be remembered as the man who put the world into the palm of your hand.
Without Steve Jobs, there wouldn't be an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod - and we may not even know we needed them.
The visionary Apple founder helped usher in a new era of personal computer. In 1984, the Macintosh made computing simpler with a little invention called the mouse and an elegantly innovative operating system.
But that was just for starters. The hippie geek went on to revolutionize the way we live our lives.
He was not a software programmer or a hardware technician. He had a unique ability to know what we want before we realised what it was. With his ingenuity and imagination, the creative genius behind Apple was being compared tonight to Thomas Edison in respect to the immense impact he had around the world.
Who would think a computer company would change the way we listened to music or made phone calls to one another?
As much as his early achievements with the Macintosh II played a key role in the march of the PC, it was his second go round at Apple that cemented his legacy.
He once famously said he wanted to 'make a dent in the universe' and the way he went about it was to ensure Apple made 'the whole widget' - both hardware and software. The company introduced colour monitors long before any of its rivals.
After falling out with Apple, he was ousted at the age of 30, but he returned in 1996 and became CEO the following year. Once back in control, he set about transforming the consumer electronics industry.
Jobs foresaw that the Mac could become the hub at the centre of a digital lifestyle.
With the music industry in chaos with shared music causing online anarchy, Jobs took advantage by creating the iPod, a pocket-sized computer that carried an entire music library. Then came the iTunes store, allowing customers to buy individual songs at just 99 cents a time.
In 2007, he did the same to the mobile phone business, transforming the iPhone into an iconic touchscreen mini-computer that worked as a music player, GPS, camera, paid for Starbucks and did just about everything that was asked of it...including being a cell phone. The App store, allowing users to buy their own applications online, was introduced shortly afterwards.
Three years later came the iPad, the sleek personal tablet computer that combined the ease of use of an Apple computer with the convenience and accessibility of the iPhone.
With each new product, Jobs was the frontman, introducing his latest invention to a public hungry to snap up his latest innovation.
Sadly, he was missing when his successor Tim Cook, showed off the new iPhone yesterday. Now Apple is on its own.

Six months ago it was the must-have gadget which some stores sold out of and many had to wait days or weeks to buy.
But Barack Obama managed to get his hands on Apple's tablet device before it even hit the shops - after being given one personally by Steve Jobs.
The U.S. president revealed his own friends in high places after saying in an interview he was given an iPad 2 'a little bit early' by the former Apple CEO.

In a recent interview with George Stephanopoulous of ABC News, Obama said: 'Steve Jobs actually gave it to me, a little bit early. Yeah, it was cool. I got it directly from him.'

It is no secret that the President is an avowed Blackberry user, but he could be tempted by an early look at Apple's latest handset, which has voice control and a faster chip.
The President is clearly a fan of new technology, after he invited the world's biggest internet entrepreneurs to a technology summit in California in February.
Among the guests at Obama's dinner were then Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
The new iPhone is iPhone 4S, not iPhone 5, and the voice-controlled handset is set to launch on October 14.
Apple's share price plunged 3 per cent after it was revealed that the new phone would be the 4S, not an all-new iPhone 5.
