Johnny Depp Talks to Patti Smith About Working with Angelina Jolie, Jack Sparrow, and His Own Musical Aspirations

“Meeting her and getting to know her was a real pleasant surprise,” Johnny Depp tells rock legend Patti Smith, writing for Vanity Fair, of working with Angelina Jolie on their upcoming film, The Tourist. “You don’t know what she might be like—if she has any sense of humor at all. I was so pleased to find that she is incredibly normal, and has a wonderfully kind of dark, perverse sense of humor.”

Depp tells Smith of the challenges he and his co-star faced with constant media scrutiny on set. “Poor thing, dogged by paparazzi, her and her husband, Brad…all their kids,” Depp says of Angelina and her famous brood. “There are times when you see how ridiculous is this life, how ludicrous it is, you know, leaving your house every morning and being followed by paparazzi.”

Depp tells Smith about the difficulties that arose while filming together—having to be discreet to avoid unwarranted speculation—which included “having to hide, sometimes not even being able to talk to each other in public because someone will take a photograph and it will be misconstrued and turned into some other shit.”

Depp compares Angelina to another famous leading lady. “I’ve had the honor and the pleasure and gift of having known Elizabeth Taylor for a number of years,” he says. “You know, you sit down with her, she slings hash, she sits there and cusses like a sailor, and she’s hilarious. Angie’s got the same kind of thing, you know, the same approach.”

On the set of the upcoming installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, Smith asks Depp what it’s like to play the iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow. “Somebody once asked [Hunter S. Thompson], “What is the sound of one hand clapping, Hunter?,” and he smacked him. Captain Jack was kind of like that for me, an opening up of this part of yourself,” Depp says. “There is a little Bugs Bunny in all of us.”

“They couldn’t stand him. They just couldn’t stand him,” Depp says of Disney’s reaction to his controversial interpretation of Sparrow. “I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’ Depp reveals to Smith, however, that he remained unfazed by the studio’s hysteria. “Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, What’s wrong with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?… And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.”

Depp tells Smith why his role of a mathematician in The Tourist appealed to him: “I was always fascinated by people who are considered completely normal, because I find them the weirdest of all.” Of the complications of having played so many eccentric roles in his career, he says, “They’re all still there, which on some level can’t be the healthiest thing in the world…. I always picture it as this chest of drawers in your body—Ed Wood is in one, the Hatter is in another, Scissorhands is in another…. They’re still very close to the surface.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Depp talks to Smith about their shared fondness for the Monkees’ 60s pop hit “Daydream Believer”; the music career he almost had (“Going into acting was an odd deviation from a particular road that I was on in my late teens, early 20s, because I had no desire, no interest, really, in it at all. I was a musician and I was a guitarist, and that’s what I wanted to do”); being born in the wrong time (“I really believe that, at a certain point, if you’re born in ’60-something or whatever, you got ripped off—you know what I mean? I always felt like I was meant to have been born in another era, another time”); and what he’d still like to accomplish: “[Marlon Brando said,] Why don’t you just take a year and go and study Shakespeare, or go and study Hamlet. Go and work on Hamlet and play that part. Play that part before you’re too old…. So what he was trying to tell me was: play that fucking part, man. Play that part before you’re too long in the tooth. Play it. And I would like to. I’d really, really like to.”

Top 10 Johnny Depp Movies!!

So since his latest movie Public Enemies comes out today, July 1, we thought it would be a great idea to do a recap of Johnny Depp's career counting down his top 10 movies.

#10 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Playing Willie Wonka, Depp takes a chance and creates a crazy character. Even though the critics didn't respond well, it has everything a Johnny Depp movie would have.

#9 The Secret Window

Although it may not have earned the best reviews, this Stephen King adaptation still makes our list. Why you ask? Even though the plot may not have been a masterpiece, Johnny Depp still performed up to par. Depp takes the opportunity to play his character Mort Rainey dazed and eccentric. Perfect Depp action there!

#8 Chocolat

Johnny shows us his romantic side when he plays his character Roux. His romantic character shows his versatility as an actor, since he can be at an extreme, but still has sex appeal.

#7 Crybaby

Here's the break out of the bad ass Johnny Depp we all know and love. Wade "Crybaby" Walker is the bad guy who falls for the good girl. After this movie, he became the next teen heart throb and has kept us wrapped around his finger since. As we've seen before, Johnny Depp stole the show and the hearts of the audience.

#6 What's Eating Gilbert Grape

Johnny Depp plays the challenging role as the eldest brother to a mentally challenged boy (Leonardo DiCaprio). As the head of the household, Gilbert Grape must keep the family together after his father died and his mom became too obese to take care of herself. Like many of his other roles, Depp creates a complex, dramatic character that is real to audiences, making the movie come to life.

#5 Edward Scissorhands

Even though it is an unfathomable character, Johnny Depp gives his character Edward Scissorhands human-like qualities that make your heart ache. Edward, who has lived as a recluse his whole life, is taken under Peg's wing as she moves him to the suburbs. While adjusting to living life with others, Edward falls in love with Peg's daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder), who is drawn away from him at first, but eventually, falls in love with him. His gentleness and chemistry with Ryder sold the movie, making it believable and relatable to all audiences.

#4 Blow

Blow is based on the true story of George Jung who climbs to the top of the drug trafficking world and then hits rock bottom when he's busted by authorities. Depp didn't take his character on the wacky ride we've seen other characters go down. He plays George seriously capturing everything from his mannerisms to desire for wealth and excitement. His scenes where he says good bye to his family are heart-wrenching since Depp is so convincing. Critics even claim he is similar to the actual person. This movie would be any ordinary rise to the top, fall to the bottom had Johnny Depp not played George.

#3 Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Not only can he act, but Johnny Depp proves he can sing in his role as Sweeney Todd. This role gave him an Oscar Nomination and a Golden Globe for "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy." Obviously, he nailed more than just notes. Sweeney Todd is an estranged barber who has come back to avenge his dead wife. Depp's performance of his funny yet dark character would bring eerie smiles and chills to even the bravest. We love this movie for its ironic twist and once again, the man who made the movie come to life.

#2 Finding Neverland

Its the movie that captured your hearts, and reminded you to follow your dreams. Depp's character as Sir James Matthew Barrie got him back on the nomination list for best actor for both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Like Blow and Donnie Brasco, Johnny was playing an actual person, the author of Peter Pan. With the challenge of respecting the memory of J.M. Barrie, Depp comments, "You owe it to their memory, to everything they did in life, and to their families to do as good a job as possible and be as honest about it as possible." And he did just that in this stunning performance.

#1 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

At first, Disney didn't want Depp to play the role of Jack Sparrow, even calling him a flamboyant pirate. Little did they know that Johnny Depp's performance would make the movie and keep fans hooked for the not so popular second and third Pirate flicks. He was nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Globe for his iconic character, unfortunately, he didn't win. But how hard is it to get nominated for a comedic character! Look at the nominees this year, and guaranteed, they will mostly be from dramatic movies. Captain Jack Sparrow was so iconic, Disneyland had to change the original Pirates of the Caribbean ride to conform to the character's popularity. Jack Sparrow demonstrated Johnny Depp's immense versatility, since this role serves as a turning point for his other roles and his segue-way into the hearts of the new generation. Honestly, this role pretty much won him People's Sexiest Man of the Year in 2003.

So there you have it. The top 10 Johnny Depp movies! Will Public Enemies make the next list? Find out today!!

Blu-Ray Review: Alice in Wonderland

Geplaatst door Bram op 26-06-2010 21:24 - Bron: FilmTotaal

Regie: Tim Burton | Cast: Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter), Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen), Anne Hathaway (White Queen), e.a. | Speelduur: 109 minuten | Jaar: 2010 | Bioscooprelease: 11 maart 2010 | Retail release: 2 juni 2010 | EAN: 8717418260491 | FilmTotaal Recensie

In Alice in Wonderland is Alice is zeventien jaar oud.

Mad Depp and ‘Alice’ Break Box Office Records with $116M

March 7th, 2010 ·

Johnny even beats his Pirates’ booty

By Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 3-7-10 — “Alice in Wonderland” found a huge rabbit hole with $116 million in carrots, making it the biggest (non-sequel) pic opening in history.

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter led the film to the highest-grossing first-quarter film ever. Though Spider-Man 2 opened larger, it was a sequel, as were pictures like the Star Wars sequels. Alice found another $94M in tweedle-dees and tweedle-dums internationally – breaking $200 million as a bow during a busy Oscar week when many folks want to see a nominated film.

Part of the reason is Depp, a great actor yet with this kind of $200M-plus clout? Plus amazing production values. Part of the puzzle is that the film came out on 3-D on a little more than 2,000 screens in the U.S. and Americans have fallen in love with 3-D. The point is it costs more to attend, raising the grosses.

“Brooklyn’s Finest,” earned $13.5 million at 1,936 screens. Pic comes just a week after the studio launched its horror remake “The Crazies,” which grossed $7 million at 2,479 engagements.

Shutter Island is but one boat trip away from the magic $100M mark while Academy Award nominee Avatar is at a record $720M domestic.

That may be a little much for Oscar voters (who actually sent in their ballots two week ago) who like a big film yet their jobs and don’t want to think they could lose them to computer graphics.
