#Earthquake #sismo #terremoto 700 quakes hit El Salvador in 24 hours

Swarm of 700 quakes unnerve residents of El Salvador

November 26, 2011 SAN SALVADOR (Reuters): More than 700 slight to moderate earthquakes hit an area in eastern El Salvador in a 24-hour period, damaging dozens of homes but hurting no one. The brief quakes, which started Thursday and ranged from 1.8 to 4.6 in magnitude, have occurred in the municipality of El Carmen, some 163 km (101 miles) east of the capital of San Salvador, the country’s National Territory agency said. Jorge Melendez, in charge of civil protection, said on Friday that 80 homes were damaged by the tremors, known as an earthquake swarm. A hospital in the area showed cracks on the walls but no structural damage so far, he said. Army troops were sent in to monitor the damaged areas. While authorities have not ordered evacuations yet, many residents of El Carmen chose to sleep in the open and the army was handing out tents. El Salvador suffered two powerful earthquakes 10 any ten years ago: one of 7.6 magnitude in January 2001 and another of 6.6 magnitude a month later. The quakes killed more than 1,150 people and left about one million others homeless. El Savador is a region on the turbulent subduction border where the Cocos Plate interfaces with the ever-growing more dangerous Caribbean plate. As can be seen from the map, El Salvador is lined with volcanoes. –The Star

Cyber Monday outlook: big deals, record sales

@CNNMoneyTech November 26, 2011: 7:23 PM ET
Cyber Monday deals
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Did you skip the lines on Black Friday? There's still Cyber Monday -- and analysts are expecting an abundance of deals to bring in record online sales this year.
Andrew Lipsman, an industry analyst at data tracking firm ComScore, said sales for the one-day shopping event are projected to hit a record $1.2 billion this year.

Almost every major retailer plans on taking advantage of the hottest day to shop online. According to the Shop.org's eHoliday survey, eight out of 10 online retailers will offer promotions on Cyber Monday.
But the deals aren't just limited to Monday. Ahead of the big day, more than 90% of online merchants will be offering promotions over Thanksgiving weekend.
A survey by comparison shopping site PriceGrabber found that 39% of consumers who plan to shop over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend said they intended to do so on Cyber Monday. That's up 2 percentage points from last year.
It's a trend analysts are calling "couch commerce" -- more people want to spend money online from the comfort of their homes rather than head out to the shops.

I braved Black Friday!

Lelah Manz, chief strategist of commerce at Akamai (AKAM), cited the rise of tablet computers in the last year as a major game-changer in e-commerce.
"If you think about when the concept of Cyber Monday was first born, it was a time when people had dial-up access at home -- it was the office place or the workplace where they could access sites," Manz said. "Now everyone has broadband access. People have tablets, they're able to get online earlier and at home, and retailers are trying to capture that mind share."
According to an IBM (IBM, Fortune 500) Coremetrics report, 15% of web traffic in the U.S. in November will stem from smart phones and tablets rather than PC's. In order to tap into that traffic, retailers are rolling out the deals early this year, said Manz.
As valuable ad space is snatched up by major retailers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, mid-sized retailers are leaking deals ahead of Cyber Monday to get their place in the spotlight too, said Graham Jones, General Manager of PriceGrabber.

7 must-have Black Friday apps

"What we saw last year -- a lot of the medium size retailers, they didn't get in front of the consumers, so they are the ones leaking the deals earlier," Jones said. "The earlier these deals are coming out is a function of the retailers not wanting to be squeezed out of the limelight."
But don't expect the online deals ahead of Cyber Monday to impact the big day. According to a Shop.org survey, nearly 60% of workers will go online to shop for holiday gifts at work, and many of the retailers are waiting for Monday to push out some of the best promotions.
"Consumers have come to expect the absolute best online holiday deals on Cyber Monday," Pam Goodfellow, BIGresearch Consumer Insights Director, said in a release. BIGresearch is a marketing research firm that conducts surveys for the industry trade group National Retail Federation.
Online companies are still placing big bets on Cyber Monday and taking steps to prep for a day when online traffic is expected to spike. OpenSky, an online shopping platform that offers products curated by various celebrities and influential people -- from chef Tom Colicchio to fashion designer Cynthia Rowley -- has been ramping up efforts to make sure the site runs smoothly.
"We're expecting our biggest day ever - we have 10,000 new people joining OpenSky every day and we expect sales to be five times our largest day," said OpenSky Founder John Caplan. "We've made improvements to the site to make it run faster. We've added additional shipping options, gift wrapping, customer service staff and have all hands on deck from now through the holiday."
The company also plans to announce lifestyle guru Martha Stewart as a curator on the site - a move the six-month-old company hopes will boost interest in the biggest online shopping day of the year.

Eu estou trabalhando tranquilamente", completou a ministra.

“A cidade é carente do poder público e a região necessitava desta operação.

Next up for Apple, it's iTV – the television that will respond when you shout at it

After success in the music and phone markets, company hopes to realise Steve Jobs's ambition for new hi-tech product

Comments made by Steve Jobs to his biographer have heightened speculation. Photograph: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
Apple is designing a television that you can shout and gesticulate at – and it will understand you.
Having revolutionised the music and mobile phone industries with its iPod and iPhone, the company is planning an "iTV" to turn couch surfing into a hi-tech experience.
The Japanese firm Sharp has been asked to begin commercial production of Apple TV screens in February, with the sets available in the second half of 2012, according to analyst Peter Misek at the American bank Jefferies.
"Other TV manufacturers have begun a scrambling search to identify what iTV will be and do," Misek claimed. "They hope to avoid the fate of other industries and manufacturers who were caught flat-footed by Apple."
An internet-connected TV offering seamless links to cloud services to download films – as well as a new level of interactivity – could threaten other manufacturers as well as taking viewers away from pay-TV giants such as BSkyB. Senior engineer Jeff Robbin, who built the iTunes service and helped to create the iPod, is reported to be overseeing the project. Speculation reached new heights when the TV project was mentioned in a biography published soon after the death of Apple's founder Steve Jobs last month.
Jobs told his biographer: "I'd like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud. It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it."
In October the US patent office published a filing by Apple for "real time video process control using gestures", which describes using infrared, motion and other sensors to read the user's movements. Gestures could edit video, or "throw" it from one device to another, say to transfer a film from a mobile phone to a bigger screen.
The patents mention facial recognition, to tag individuals within videos so that home videos can be grouped according to who features in them. This autumn the iPhone was updated with a highly accurate voice control application called Siri, and some observers believe it will feature on the TV sets.
What sounds like science fiction is already in use by niche products. Chinese manufacturer Hisense unveiled an internet TV last month which runs on Google's Android software and allows the viewer to issue commands with a wave of the hand.
Microsoft's Kinect, which links to the Xbox games console to TV sets, acts as a digital video recorder and reads voice and gesture commands. Users can rewind, fast forward, call up menus, or select games and channels without having to find the remote control.
Thanks to four microphones, it separates the user's voice from other noises in the room and users must say "Xbox" before speaking a command.
The venture is a risky one for Apple, whose previous foray into the world of television resulted in a rare failure. Apple TV, introduced in 2007, is a box that can store video and connect the TV to the internet or to the laptop to view photos. However, its latest model is thought to have sold no more than 2m units, compared to 40m iPads since March 2010.
Apple TV already incorporates some gesture commands, using the iPhone as a remote: users can flick it left or right or drag two fingers across its screen to fast forward or rewind, and tap to play.
Misek says the iTV could have an initial production run of 5m to 10m units, and will use liquid crystal displays. The company declined to comment.
Apple has taken over an entire Sharp factory to make its latest generations of phones and tablet computers, which will appear next year with brighter, less battery-draining screens. It is estimated to have spent $500m to $1bn buying manufacturing equipment for the plant, and retooling of a production line is believed to be under way to produce TV screens.
Technology researcher Benedict Evans at Enders Analysis was sceptical about revolutionary an iTV could be. He said that accidental gestures could disrupt viewing, adding: "It would be like sitting in Sothebys and desperately not moving so you don't accidentally make a bid for £10m."
The project will open a new front in Apple's battle with the South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung, which already makes internet-connected TV sets and has been competing against the US group to produce high-end tablet computers and smartphones. The two are locked in an international patent disputes, with some 20 court cases around the world.

Eman El-shenawi: Ahmadinejad, the ‘new Hitler,’ Israel, the same victim?

Israel says Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is today’s “Hitler” who seeks to annihilate the Jewish state. (File photo)
It was almost like a play, with a few ridiculous characters to break the usual diplomatic decorum.

The Wikileaks-stained U.S. cables in November 2010 read like a parodied script of Alexander the Great’s ancient conquests, with a few altered leading roles to fill out the comedy. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was “Hitler,” Russia’s Vladimir Putin was the “Alpha male,” Nicolas Sarkozy of France was branded a “naked emperor,” all as allegedly described by U.S. officials and revealed in leaked documents.
A year later, and one of these names has destructively arisen again: Ahmadinejad as Hitler. The narrative stems from Israeli government chatter as the country grapples with the prospect of a nuclear Iran and how to “deal with it.” A report from the United Nations last week listed damning evidence that Iran is conducting research they hope will lead to an atomic weapon. Indeed, this would be enough to prompt Israel into military action against the ayatollahs. And no matter how much Ahmadinejad plugs it nuclear program as “peaceful,” there is no doubt that Israel fears the threat. Hence the Hitler title.

But he is not perhaps Israel’s Hitler, Ahmadinejad is more specifically Netanyahu’s Hitler, says Israeli columnist Nahum Barnea, who gave his take on what the Israeli premier could be thinking: “Ahmadinejad is Hitler; if he isn’t stopped in time, there will be another Holocaust.” He continued, “There are those who describe Netanyahu’s attitude on the matter as an obsession: All his life he dreamed of being Churchill; Iran gives him the opportunity.”

And this notion has not gone by unmissed, that perhaps Netanyahu wishes to go down in history as a leader who was able to completely fend off the danger threatening the existence of the Hebrew state, just as Churchill was able to eliminate the Nazis, who had threatened the world.

Perhaps Netanyahu lives this scenario, obsessed with World War II parallels, real or imagined, Barnea says. But would Iran, with its nuclear power, do what the Nazis did? Would it come remotely close? Doubt it. The obvious differences are clear and Ahmadinejad would never be a Hitler.

But for Israel, the ulimate fear from Iran is its involvement in the tit-for-tat scenarios between Israelis and Islamist groups; nuclear proliferation to strengthen groups such as Hezbollah or Hamas or other rogue partners. Iran could support them to no longer be the feeble Qassam rocket-bearers they once were.

But is that scenario worthy of revisiting a grim Jewish history with the mention of Hitler? It was only five years ago that Netanyahu said of the Iranian nuclear issue: “The year is 1938 and Iran is Germany.”

According to one military analyst, “people outside Israel don’t understand how profound memories of the Holocaust are, and how they affect future policy-making.”

“At the end of the day, this policy of ‘never again’ would dictate Israel’s behavior when intelligence comes through that Iran has come close to a bomb,” Ronen Bergman, senior military analyst for Israel’s Yediot Ahronot newspaper, told The Telegraph.

For Israel, if Ahmadinejad really is Hitler, then Netanyahu has a chance at being Israel’s post-holocaust protector, and hero. But the Middle East remains on a spiteful loop. If Israel attacks, Iran can argue that it needs a nuclear bomb to protect itself from future attacks.

All the while, the roles of Hitler and Churchill are lurking in the shadows, waiting to be filled.

NBA Lockout Over, Players React On Twitter

Submitted by Celebrity News Wire on November 26, 2011
It seems there might be a Santa Claus after all.
NBA players and owners agreed on a tentative deal very early Saturday morning bringing the 149-day NBA lockout to an end, reports Sports Illustrated.
If all goes well, the season will kick off on Christmas Day.
"We have reached a tentative understanding," NBA commissioner David Stern confirmed during a press conference at 3:30 a.m. that followed a 15-hour negotiating session in Manhattan. "We're optimistic that the NBA season will come to pass on Dec. 25, Christmas Day, with a triple-header."
Players will vote on the tentative agreement on Saturday or Sunday, explains Yahoo Sports.
But fans might want to hold off with the celebration. Some players told Yahoo Sports they plan to vote against the labor deal.
While either side will be able to end the 10-year contract after six years, the New York Times notes it is overwhelmingly in favor of the owners and will include a pay-cut for players, shorter contracts and smaller raises.
With the second NBA lockout in history seemingly coming to an end, check out how the players reacted to the news on Twitter below.

As deadline looms, Occupy LA says they'll stay

Robert Gauthier  /  AP
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Charles Beck announce plans to close City Hall Park to Occupy protesters as of midnight, Sunday, Nov. 27, Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, in Los Angeles. Despite a fast-approaching deadline set by the mayor and police chief, very few of the anti-Wall Street protesters from Occupy Los Angeles had begun breaking down their tents Saturday on the City Hall lawn — and most said they didn't intend to.
The Occupy LA encampment was abuzz with activity, but nearly all of it was aimed at how to deal with authorities come Monday's 12:01 a.m. deadline.
Some handed out signs mocked up to look like the city's notices to vacate, advertising a Monday morning "eviction block party."
Dozens attended a teach-in on resistance tactics, including how stay safe in the face of rubber bullets, tear gas canisters and pepper spray.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced Friday that despite his sympathy for the protesters' cause, it was time for the camp of nearly 500 tents to leave for the sake of public health and safety.
The mayor said the movement is at a "crossroads," and it must "move from holding a particular patch of park to spreading the message of economic justice."
But occupiers did not intend to give up their patch of park too easily.
Will Picard, who sat Saturday in a tent amid his artwork with a "notice of eviction" sign posted outside, said the main organizers and most occupiers he knows intend to stay.
"Their plan is to resist the closure of this encampment and if that means getting arrested so be it," Picard said. "I think they just want to make the police tear it down rather than tear it down themselves."
But some agreed with the mayor that the protest had run its course.
"I'm going," said Luke Hagerman, who sat looking sad and resigned in the tent he's stayed in for a month. "I wish we could have got more done."

Villaraigosa expressed pride that Los Angeles has lacked the tension, confrontation and violence seen at similar protests in other cities. But that peace was likely to get its biggest test on Monday.
Police gave few specifics about what tactics they would use for those who had no intention of leaving.
Chief Charlie Beck said at Friday's news conference that officers would definitely not be sweeping through the camp and arresting everyone just after midnight.
But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, Beck said that despite the lack of confrontations in the camp's two-month run, he was realistic about what must happen.
"I have no illusions that everybody is going to leave," Beck said in an interview with the Times. "We anticipate that we will have to make arrests."
But he added, "We certainly will not be the first ones to apply force."
Ue Daniels, 21, said as an artist he's "as nonviolent as they come" but he planned on resisting removal any way he could.
"I think we'll comply as far as putting our tents on the sidewalk maybe, that's something that's been going around."
But as far as leaving altogether?
"They would probably have to drag me away," he said.
He also suspected that though the general consensus among campers is to stay, he expects many will change their mind once police arrive. "I don't know who's going to stay, you can say something, but you never know until you're in the situation how you're going to react."
