BitTorrent Releases New “Share” Application

BitTorrent Inc. just released a new standalone file-sharing application called “Share.” The application aims to make it easier for tech novices to share large files with friends, without having to get familiar with all the BitTorrent customs and lingo. Share will eventually be integrated into BitTorrent’s flagship client uTorrent.
shareBitTorrent Inc. is mostly known for the development of the uTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline clients, but today the company adds another piece of software to its arsenal.
Dubbed “Share,” the new application is targeted at people who want to share large files with a private group of people, as opposed to uploading them via a public BitTorrent site for all the world to see. With the tagline “No more storage limits. No more fees” it also takes a stab at the increasingly popular cyberlockers.
Although the software uses BitTorrent under the hood, people are not required to create torrent files. Instead, they can select files on their computer, pick a person or group to share them with, and the application takes care of the rest.
According to BitTorrent’s chief strategist Shahi Ghanem the new application fits perfectly into a world where media files grow larger and larger by the day.
“With today’s consumer cameras/video recorders producing stunning quality, traditional media sharing requires concessions. With Share, you don’t have to crop photos, reduce resolutions or cut video length to easily share something with your friends, family and colleagues. It’s much faster than traditional ‘cloud’ solutions and easy for anyone,” says Ghanem.

Share with Share

Those with a keen eye for detail may see similarities between “Share” and the “Project Chrysalis” client that was released last year. The new application is an improvement over the Chrysalis client, directly based on input from users.
“After evaluating the user response and feedback, we realized we had the right goal, but users identified challenges with the implementation. Ultimately, we took what we learned and started again from scratch. Share was born,” Ghanem explains.
The Share project is currently in an early Alpha phase, but once it has matured the application will be integrated into the existing uTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline clients. Although some might find this useful, there is also a group of uTorrent users who would prefer to keep a lighter client.
In recent years uTorrent has been augmented with quite a few extra bells and whistles, features that some traditional BitTorrent users are not interested in. To address these concerns, we asked whether BitTorrent Inc. would consider releasing a more basic version of the popular client as well.
“We might consider it in the future – it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility,” we were told. “Right now, even with the new features, the client is still very small and efficient on resources. We also review features very frequently, and if they aren’t being used, we are always open to removing them.”
A uTorrent “light” may indeed not be a bad idea to please the angry mob. Those who are less resistant to change are of course invited to give Share a spin.

NYC Mayor Bloomberg Vows to Learn Code in 2012

Mayor BloombergMore than 170,000 people have signed up for Codecademy’s challenge to learn how to code in 2012, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is one of them.
The challenge, Code Year, was launched by New York-based startup Codecademy on Sunday and quickly took off as Twitter and Facebook users adopted it as their New Years resolution.
Codecademy turns learning JavaScript into an interactive game. Anybody who signs up for Code Year will receive one of these programming lessons each week in their email inbox. Mayor Bloomberg tweeted on Thursday afternoon that he had signed up for the challenge.

“I think it just goes to show the importance of what we’re doing – and the growing emphasis NYC is putting on technology,” Codecademy co-founder Zach Sims tells Mashable. “It’s too awesome for words.”
Bloomberg has taken a large interest in the New York technology scene, showing up everywhere from TechStars demo day to a Facebook press event. It’s not a surprise that he also showed up when a NYC startup signed up 170,000 people for a tech challenge in less than a week. Who knows? After he finishes the course, maybe he’ll start attending hackathons, too.

Google, Amazon, Facebook, And Twitter Consider Blackout To Protest SOPA

Blackout
Welcome to the new internet.
While the discussion of SOPA has been on hold while Congress is in recess, the fight against internet regulation has continued off the hill. The NetCoalition trade association, which contains big internet names like Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Twitter, have said that they would consider a massive service blackout if it looks like the bill might get passed. This "nuclear option" would result in some of the internet's most commonly visited locations becoming temporarily unavailable, which out to draw some negative attention to the legislation. There's nothing people hate more than actually having to work at work.
While the intent of SOPA is to halt internet piracy by holding content hosters (rather than just uploaders) culpable for copyright infringement, the members of NetCoalition are concerned that it would fundamentally change the way our internet functions. Any kind of content hosting site (such as YouTube) would have a very difficult time remaining in operation under the new legislation, as they would be violating copyright law whenever an infringing file is placed on their site. This means either constant legal battles, extremely broad licensing agreements, or company review of any content that would go on their network.
While NetCoalition would probably like to avoid a service blackout, since they would take some backlash themselves, this is one method that the supporters of SOPA simply can't match. Should such a blackout occur, you can rest assured that you will hear about it on Ology first - probably because the rest of the web is offline.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD Teased Ahead Of CES

Filed in: Mobile Phones

By , January 05, 2012 @ 8:49am
CES is just around the corner and as expected, we are seeing a flood of announcements and teasers about what’s going to be showcased at the event. Sony Ericsson’s pre-CES teaser campaign started earlier with their messages on their Facebook and Google pages. Now the company has released yet another teaser, a few close-ups of an HD-capable smartphone.
“Just a few more days until we can reveal some interesting news” says Sony Ericsson, but no hints regarding the identity of the device or what’s under the hood.
As you can see in the above image, the mysterious device has a dedicated shutter button, an HD-capable camera, a micro-USB port and the onscreen toggle to switch between photos and videos with a simple touch.
The images suggest that the new device is similar in outward appearance to the XPERIA Arc S handset. The Arc S has the same curved camera key, HD labeling and squared-off microUSB port.
We are most probably looking at the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD, previously also known by the name Xperia Nozomi.
The camera-related hints suggest that the new device might be coming equipped with something special for all the shutterbugs out there. We are expecting a 12 to 13 MP camera with an Exmor R CMOS sensor.
And if it is capable of recording 1080p HD video, you can surely expect high-end specs. Rumors point towards a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM along with a 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720. Hopefully the device will be powered by ICS.
Whatever is coming, we definitely won’t have to wait too long to learn everything about it. Stay tuned to this space for updates.

Kanye West Ends Twitter Drought With Rant On Design, Education, And Steve Jobs

Welcome back, Mr. West

When I first joined Twitter, one of the first people that I followed was humble rapper Kanye West. I’d been told of his amazing Twitter presence by a trustworthy friend, and so I decided to give him a slot in my then-limited stream.
And as anyone who followed Kanye back in ye olden tymes knows, he did not disappoint. Whether he was discussing the merits of beef flavored pineapples, fur pillows or even ninjas, Mr. West was always a bright spot in my Twitter stream.
Then something happened. Kanye stopped tweeting. Well, he didn’t really stop tweeting altogether, but the volume of tweets went down – way down. So much so that there were week-long periods where we didn’t get one single musing from him.
But now, it appears as though Kanye might be back as a Twitter force, as he went on a nearly 100-tweet rampage that spanned only a few hours on Wednesday evening.
And during that rampage, Kanye tackled the Grammys, the education system, and announced a new design company called DONDA. During all of that he also slipped in some stuff about Steve Jobs and Michael Jackson. All in all, a successful little thought stream.
Here’s what Kanye says about his idea for DONDA:
I have started a new company and I’m so excited about the name…. it’s got the best name ever of all companies of all time!!!…. 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
DONDA is a design company which will galvanize amazing thinkers and put them in a creative space to bounce there dreams and ideas… 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
I am assembling a team of architects, graphic designers, directors musicians, producers, AnRs, writers, publicist, social media experts… 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
DONDA will be comprised of over 22 divisions with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford… 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
We want to help simplify and aesthetically improve everything we see hear, touch, taste and feel. 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
…To dream of, create, advertise and produce products driven equally by emotional want and utilitarian need.. To marry our wants and needs. 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
A little vague perhaps, but you can’t say it’s not a large-scale idea. He also took on this year’s Grammys:
I appreciate having the most nominations at the Grammies but I feel so conflicted by the fact that award shows sometimes are completely… 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
…illogical 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
Good logic tells me smile Kanye… the world likes you again… red or blue pill? … aaaaand Swallow lol 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
I wouldn’t have the prestige I have if it wasn’t partially for the Grammies validation and I honor that 14 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
Then it was on to the American education system:
Help education. School systems were designed to turn people into factory workers. 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
Math classes should teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, accounting and money management aaaaaand cut!!! …. 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
UNLESS YOU’RE A MATH MAJOR!!!! Kids you should be able to take majors starting in grammar school like how it is at performing art schools 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
Instead of kicking kids out of schools for using there iPhones… why not promote it? Allow kids to use search engines to do test… 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
And the visionaries we need to model our thoughts after to achieve all of this? Michael Jackson and Steve Jobs, of course:
We can collectively effect the world trough design. We need to pick up where steve jobs left off 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
We need to take what Michael Jackson felt and Mcqueen and Steve Jobs and we need make things better… 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
Kanye ended the night with a George Bernard Shaw quote:
“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. …. 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
…But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” – George Bernard Shaw 13 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto
Despite what you think about Kanye’s big ideas (and I happen to agree on some of the education stuff), you have to admit that it’s a blast to run through it all. Legitimate big ideas or drug-induced ramblings, it doesn’t really matter to me. It’s just nice to have one of Twitter’s biggest stars back in the game. Let’s just hope he stays there. If sure some of this new batch of tweets is worthy of a stitching.
