Google starting to censor blogs

Following Twitter’s decision last month to begin censoring the messages of users based on restrictions of their respective countries, Google has followed suit and announced that it will begin a similar practice with its own blogging service.
Blogger, the web-log service run by Internet giant Google, will begin censoring the personal posts of its users in order to comply with local laws rather than encouraging an internationally open Internet. While the company has previously allowed users of the World Wide Web to post wide-open opinions on its Blogger site, it will now allow individual jurisdictions to govern what can and can’t be posted on the Web.
Under Google’s new policies, personal pages hosted on Blogger will be redirected to country-specific URLs, such as “.in” for India and “.au” for Australia. The company writes that “Migrating to localized domains will allow us to continue promoting free expression and responsible publishing while providing greater flexibility in complying with valid removal requests pursuant to local law.”
By implementing this, adds Google, “content removals can be managed on a per country basis, which will limit their impact to the smallest number of readers."
Specifically, they acknowledge that "Content [will be] removed due to a specific country's law.”
The company’s announcement comes only weeks after Twitter announced almost identical standards that will allow the microblogging site to start censoring tweets specific to their country of origin as well. With both entities representing a massive chunk of online traffic internationally, advocates against Internet regulations fear what repercussions will follow. The kick-off of the Arab Spring last year was magnified in part by the ease in which updates were transmitted from cities such as Cairo and Benghazi, where news was often relayed with tweets and emails sent direct from the scene.
Google and Twitter’s previous policies allowed users to operate as per American law, permitting a much more permeable flow of information. By adopting its new rules, however, the countries where freedom of speech and Internet are practically nonexistent will be able to censor specific topics. Those same locales, of course, are countries where the same government that censors the Internet also often enforces other authoritarian regulations that ravage hopes of Democracy.
“The change marks a new trend in American Internet companies bowing to the demands of authoritarian regimes,” writes Open Net Initiative in a statement this week. Amnesty International has also responded with a statement of their, insisting that, “As with other sectors, business decisions in the digital world have human rights implications. Human rights monitors and advocates have a lot more work to do since the digital revolution.”
“Our collective vigilance is needed more than ever,” adds the group.
According to the web-ranking service Alexa, Twitter and Blogger are the ninth and forty-fifth most visited sites on the Internet.

Pirate Bay prison sentences are final, court rules
THE SWEDISH Supreme Court will not grant
leave to appeal The Pirate Bay criminal verdicts, meaning the prison
sentences already handed down are final.
According to Torrent Freak, the prison time and fines imposed on Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm and Carl Lundström will stand.
In November 2010 the Swedish Court of Appeal found Neij, Sunde and Lundström guilty of criminal copyright infringement offenses.
The three had their prison sentences decreased from the levels ordered at their original 2009 trial, but were told to pay increased damages amounting to about $6.8m to the entertainment company plaintiffs.
After the latest hearing in the Supreme Court, Sunde will spend eight months in prison, Neij faces 10 months while Lundström has a four month sentence.
The fourth co-founder of the web site, Svartholm was not at the appeal hearings due to medical circumstances. Because he was also absent from an earlier hearing it was announced last year that his sentence of one year behind bars and a share of the damages would stand.
However, it's still possible that The Pirate Bay lot won't have to go to prison, as in the Swedish justice system it is common to deduct 12 months from any prison sentence on cases over five years old, depending on the court's decision.
Although The Pirate Bay is still running, it was down this morning in some regions worldwide, including the UK.
The web site claims to be the world's most resilient, but it was down in a range of locations, according to messages on Twitter. "UPDATE: Reports of The Pirate Bay being down in Australia, UK, England, Korea, Canada, Mexico and New Zealand have been confirmed," said a tweet from the @Youranonnews account. µ

The enigmatic Internet-driven collective Anonymous, thank goodness, has an anthropologist in its midst. For a few years now, Gabriella Coleman has
been arduously participant-observing in IRC chat rooms, watching
Anonymous turn from a prankster moniker to a herd of vigilantes for
global justice. In an extraordinary new essay at Triple Canopy, “Our Weirdness Is Free,” she summarizes what Anonymous is all about this way:
Beyond a foundational commitment to anonymity and the free flow of information, Anonymous has no consistent philosophy or political program. Though Anonymous has increasingly devoted its energies to (and become known for) digital dissent and direct action around various “ops,” it has no definite trajectory. Sometimes coy and playful, sometimes macabre and sinister, often all at once, Anonymous is still animated by a collective will toward mischief—toward “lulz,” a plural bastardization of the portmanteau LOL (laugh out loud). Lulz represent an ethos as much as an objective.
The
more I learn about Anonymous, especially in light of the offline,
on-the-ground praxis of the Occupy movement, the more I’ve been
wondering whether we’re seeing a glimpse of the future for all of us.
Here’s
why. Over the past couple of years, as Anons became lulled—pun
intended—into politics through their Scientology, Wikileaks, and Arab
Spring operations, the lulz ethos has turned into a mode of
movement-building. And it’s a movement that appears singularly scary to
the powers that be, from globalized corporations to the governments of
superpowers, despite (or perhaps because of) the Anons’ apparent
disorganization and probably in excess of their actual capacity:
Political operations often come together haphazardly. Often lacking an overarching strategy, Anonymous operates tactically, along the lines proposed by the French Jesuit thinker Michel de Certeau. “Because it does not have a place, a tactic depends on time—it is always on the watch for opportunities that must be seized ‘on the wing,’” he writes in The Practice of Everyday Life (1980). “Whatever it wins, it does not keep. It must constantly manipulate events in order to turn them into ‘opportunities.’ The weak must continually turn to their own ends forces alien to them.” This approach could easily devolve into unfocused operations that dissipate the group’s collective strength. But acting “on the wing” leverages Anonymous’s fluid structure, giving Anons an advantage, however temporary, over traditional institutions—corporations, states, political parties—that function according to unified plans.
This bears striking resemblance to the activist framework of “diversity of tactics” that has prevailed in the Occupy movement,
which emphasizes fostering dexterity and decentralization (as well as,
relevantly, permissiveness toward “black blocs” of masked crusaders).
But Anonymous’ allergy to unified planning isn’t limited to tactics; it
extends to overall strategy and even ultimate purpose. Continues
Coleman:
While Anonymous has not put forward any programmatic plan to topple institutions or change unjust laws, it has made evading them seem easy and desirable. To those donning the Guy Fawkes mask associated with Anonymous, this—and not the commercialized, “transparent” social networking of Facebook—is the promise of the Internet, and it entails trading individualism for collectivism.
In fact, Anonymous bespeaks a collective recognition that’s fueling uprisings from Lagos to Bucharest:
the kinds of governments we have in place actually have little capacity
for addressing the longings we have for freedom and collectivity in a
globalizing, digital age. The reason both Anonymous and Occupy Wall
Street don’t put forward “any programmatic plan” that existing
institutions could follow is that there isn’t one. Or, rather, the
movements themselves are their own programmatic plan, parallel
institutions unto themselves.
The Pirate Bay Changes Domain Name In Wake of Possible Seizure
Posted by Shauna Myers on February 2, 2012 Add comments
This news doesn’t come as much of a surprise, since .se domains do not fall under US jurisdiction and criminal charges against some of The Pirate Bay’s operators became final today after Sweden’s Supreme Court decided not to grant them leave to appeal the charges. All four defendants will be facing between 8 months and a full year in jail and combined will have to pay $6.8 million in damages.
In a famous response to a Dreamworks DMCA takedown notice in 2004, The Pirate Bay informed them that
“As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe. Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here. For your information, no Swedish law is being violated.“
Peter Sunde, a co-founder at The Pirate Bay, released a statement about their appeal denial and the entertainment industry today, saying
“Today I urge everyone to make sure that the entertainment industry does not profit from them anymore. Stop seeing their movies. Stop listening to their music. Make sure that you find alternative ways to culture.”
He encourages his readers to
“Spread and participate in culture. Remix, reuse, use, abuse. Make sure no one controls your mind. Create new systems and technology that circumvent the corruption. Start a religion. Start your own nation, or buy one. Buy a bus. Crush it to pieces.”
This encouragement comes at the same time as a new internet protest with many of the same goals, BlackMarch, tries to gain traction.
The Pirate Bay’s official blog did not make any comment about the domain change, but they did make some strong comments on internet freedom and censorship, saying that “What binds us all together is a strong belief that what we do is good. That it is something we one day can tell our grandchildren about with pride.” They also cited their involvement in other countries where there is no guarantee of Freedom of Speech.
“We read testimonials from people in Syria longing for freedom, thanking us for what we provide. We receive more than 100 visits daily from North Korea and we sure know that they need it.”
So while The Pirate Bay may have hit a bump in the road today it seems that they have no intention of slowing the charge against any that would seek to threaten the freedoms of the internet as we know it.
Tell me, what is your reaction to all of this? Is The Pirate Bay doing online freedom a good turn or are they way off-base?
