WikiLeaks: Hosni Mubarak told US not to topple Saddam Hussein

Hosni Mubarak told Dick Cheney, the former US vice-president, “three or four times” not to depose Saddam Hussein, according to leaked cables.

By ignoring his advice and invading Iraq, Mr Mubarak warned that the Americans had managed to increase the threat posed by Iran.

Mr Mubarak made the comments during a breakfast meeting with US congressmen at the presidential palace in Cairo in December, 2008.

He told one of the delegation, Sen Byron Dorgan, that the US needed to ''listen to its friends” in the region.

“When George Bush Senior was president, 'he listened to my advice. But his son does not’,” he said, according to a US cable sent on Jan 14, 2009. It continued: “Mubarak said that when President Bush Sr had called and asked what Mubarak thought about invading Iraq to get to rid of Saddam Hussein during the first Gulf war, Mubarak had told him not to because 'you won’t be able to get out and you will drown in Iraq’. Mubarak said he had tried to convey the same message to the current administration, only to be ignored.

“'I told (Vice President) Cheney three or four times’ that Iraq needed a strong leader and that it would be unwise to remove Saddam Hussein; doing so would only 'open the gate to Iran.’ Unfortunately, he said, the vice-president did not listen to his advice.”

The cable continued: “By making these mistakes, the US has empowered Iran, whose goal, according to Mubarak, is 'to control the entire region’. He [Mubarak] added that Iran is waiting for the US to leave Iraq in order to 'fill the vacuum’ and emphasised that Iran is the source of funds for many extremist groups in the region, such as Hizbollah, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Mr Mubarak also complained that the Bush administration had pushed Egypt too hard to “open up” politically.

In an earlier cable sent in July, 2008, Mr Mubarak had told another congressional delegation that “a fair dictator” was needed in Iraq.

A obesidade causa a expansão do átrio esquerdo e do ventrículo esquerdo, comprometendo a função cardíaca.

Nossa tarefa é a questão do piso regional", desconversou.

'Guitar Hero' Dead

The Guitar Hero video game franchise is officially dead. According to publisher Activision, which will close its music game division and cease development of existing Guitar Hero titles, they're ending the series in order to refocus efforts online.

“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” the company said in its most recent financial statement. “These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences."

Insiders expect that the firm will shift its attention to multiplayer, social and online connected play, a field currently characterized by all-digital products including iPhone, Facebook and downloadable casual games.

The news comes on the heels of lackluster sales performance by last holiday season’s Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Game industry news site Eurogamer also reports that severe layoffs have hit DJ Hero developer FreeStyle Games, though the future of the virtual disc jockey franchise, also a retail underperformer, has yet to be confirmed.

Signs look bleak for the music gaming industry, with MTV Games recently shuttered by Viacom following the fire sale of Rock Band creator Harmonix, which in turn dropped Rock Band Network support for Wii. As reported earlier, gaming analysts believe the pressure to convince cash-strapped shoppers to pay $60 for too-similar annual updates, let alone $100+ for new plastic peripherals, to be too much to sustain.

With the video game industry known for regularly reintroducing new franchises or translating hit titles to new devices, it’s entirely possible Guitar Hero will live on in mobile or social formats. Given potential profits from the sale of digital song downloads and updates, much cheaper to make and deliver than physical goods, it’s also unlikely that the company will completely cut off customers who want to expand the libraries on their existing games.

But at least for now, the days of rushing out to GameStop to grab a giant plastic axe controller are over.

Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston Discuss Box-Office Showdown With Justin Bieber

Their 'Just Go With It' opens against 'Never Say Never' this weekend.

The palm trees, tiki-themed decorations and ocean-blue carpet at the Tuesday-night premiere of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston's "Just Go With It" didn't fool anyone: Despite a tent meant to keep the winter at bay, it was freezing outside the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York, a far cry from the sunny Hawaiian clime in which much of the romantic comedy takes place.

Yet Sandler, Aniston and their co-stars projected nothing but warm vibes as they made their way past a massive throng of photographers and toward an equally long line of TV and print journalists. Days from now, this new flick — a comedy of errors in which Sandler convinces Aniston to pretend to be his wife in a wild scheme to secure the affections of Brooklyn Decker — opens up against Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never." This weekend at the box office is setting up to be a compelling clash between teen heartthrob and established big-screen players, but Aniston is approaching the whole thing blissfully unaware — or so she liked to joke when MTV News asked her about the face-off.

"Who?" she asked when the topic of Bieber came up.

Sandler stepped in with a little intro to the "Never Say Never" star. "Nice little kid. He sings," he explained. "He grew up in front of our eyes. He's a handsome boy."

"Very handsome," Aniston added, suddenly finding herself with a case of Bieber Fever.

For moviegoers on the fence this weekend, Sandler suggested catching a double feature at the multiplex. "We don't start fights with people. You can go to both," he said. "We'll go to Justin's movie. We'll show some respect to that kid and his family — get him some more money."

"Yeah! I hear he's hurting," deadpanned Aniston.

Others in the cast were more forthcoming about the prospect of opening up against "Never Say Never." "It's hard. We're nervous," Decker admitted. "I love myself some Justin Bieber, so I'm not going to bash anyone who goes to see that movie. I will say I love our movie!"

Dave Matthews, who co-stars as Nicole Kidman's absurdly pretentious husband, was even more blunt. "That's going to blow everything out of the water. Justin Bieber is going to blow everything out of the water for a few years," he told us. "That's what I expect — and deservedly so. What better than Bieber to blow everything out of the water? I expect nothing but my daughter's devotion to him and I will support it absolutely."

Check out everything we've got on "Just Go With It."

February 10, 2011 - 9:35AM

Freshman Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia announced Wednesday he will retire when his term ends next year, deepening the challenge to his party as it struggles to maintain a Senate majority in the 2012 elections.

In an e-mail announcement, the 65-year-old former Navy secretary said that after much thought and consideration, he had decided to return to the private sector. He offered no additional details about his plans but said he has "every intention of remaining involved in the issues that affect the well-being and the future of our country."

The announcement leaves Democrats scrambling to field a strong candidate who can keep the GOP from regaining the seat lost by Republican Sen. George Allen, who was ousted by Webb by about 9,000 votes in the 2006 election. Allen, a former governor and congressman, is running for his old seat but faces primary opposition.

Webb's exit poses potential problems for Democrats, who are clinging to a narrow majority in the Senate and have struggled in state elections since President Barack Obama's 2008 win.

Tim Kaine, a former Virginia governor and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement that he'd hoped Webb would seek re-election, but that the party has made strides "turning Virginia from a solidly Republican state to a highly competitive one."

Kaine did not indicate in the statement if he would seek the Democratic nomination to succeed Webb and he did not return a telephone request from The Associated Press for comment.

Kaine, who stepped down as governor just over a year ago, previously said he wasn't interested in the seat, but U.S. Rep. James Moran said that might have been out of respect to Webb.

"I would hope he would be seriously considering it," the northern Virginia Democrat said of Kaine. "I think a ticket of Obama and Kaine would be quite a strong ticket in 2012."

But the National Republican Senatorial Committee said Webb's decision makes Virginia an "even stronger pickup opportunity for Republicans in 2012."

Obama won Virginia in 2008, carrying a state that had traditionally backed Republican presidential nominees even as it elected Democratic and Republican governors. But Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell won the office in a landslide in 2009, and the GOP defeated three Democratic incumbents in congressional races last year.

Virginia state GOP Chairman Pat Mullins said Webb's announcement "couldn't be worse news for the Democrats."

"Instead of facing the most hotly contested Senate race in the country with the advantages of incumbency, they must deal with a nomination contest and then face a Republican candidate in the fall in a state that has overwhelming rejected nearly every Democrat since President Obama was sworn into office," Mullins said.

But state Democratic Party chairman Brian Moran, the congressman's brother, said the party was ready for the fight.

Webb was elected in 2006 after Allen, a rising Republican star eyeing a potential White House, stumbled badly in 2006 by calling a Webb campaign volunteer of Indian ancestry a "macaca," a term some cultures consider an ethnic disparagement. Posted on YouTube, video of the comment became an online hit and was grist for news reports and television comedians for weeks.

Webb and Obama both rode to victory in Virginia.

Obama spoke to Webb by telephone on Wednesday and the president thanked him for serving the country, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.

Obama issued a statement Wednesday praising Webb's service and saying he looks forward to working with him over the next two years.

"From his courageous service in Vietnam to his tireless work in the United States Senate, Jim Webb has dedicated his life to serving our nation and those who defend it," Obama said, citing Webb's work to pass a post-9/11 GI Bill and on Southeast Asia and criminal justice reform.

In a statement Wednesday, Allen, the son of the late Washington Redskins coach, said he did not enter the race to run against any one person and his campaign will continue to focus on achievable reforms.

But he faces primary opposition. Virginia tea party leader Jamie Radtke has declared her candidacy and conservative Del. Bob Marshall, who finished a close second in his bid for the Senate GOP nomination in 2008, is angling toward another race next year.

Webb is the fourth senator to announce plans to retire. The others are Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn.

Democrats, with a 53-47 majority, must defend 23 Senate seats next year, including two held by independents. Many are in swing states where Republicans hope to mount strong challenges.

By contrast, only 10 GOP-held seats will be on the ballot.

"We are a state people are going to watch, and the White House is going to be very interested in how this race plays out," said former Democratic Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, noting that the Democratic nominee and Obama will be running at the same time. "It's very important they coalesce. Whoever is running for the Senate and president have to be a team."

George Mason University political scientist Mark Rozell said Webb's announcement "upends the political landscape in Virginia." He said party leaders might press Kaine to run because of his name recognition, but that he's not sure the low-key Kaine would be "terribly comfortable" in such a Senate race.

The chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, said the party would field a strong candidate.

Webb's decision was not a complete surprise, as he had done little fundraising.

Since taking office, Webb has focused much of his energy on international issues.

Early on, Webb was seen as a potential star for his party _ a new breed of Southern Democrat who could stretch the party's appeal by connecting with conservative voters.

But his Senate career has been largely quiet. Webb took more of a behind-the-scenes approach and never emerged as a political force, even as he remained popular in Virginia.

James Ceaser, a political scientist at the University of Virginia, said Webb simply might not have had the "fire in the belly" needed for a national political career. And he said Webb might also have been discouraged by the political difficulties that Virginia Democrats faced in 2010.

Rep. Moran said the notoriously clubby and deliberative Senate might simply have not been a good fit for Webb.

"I think he enjoys getting things done, and I don't think he's a natural born politician, although he's clearly a leader," Moran said. "He hasn't told me that, he's not one to complain, but he's not a natural backslapper ... and I don't think he gets a great deal of joy out of raising money."

Dave "Mudcat" Saunders, a campaign strategist for Webb and other conservative Democrats, said he believed Webb felt "shackled" by the U.S. Senate.

"I think with his writings, the artistic Jim Webb could easily do more to help forward the causes of economic fairness and social justice out here in the real world rather than the beltway," Saunders said.

Webb is the author of six best-selling military suspense novels and "Born Fighting," a nonfiction book published in 2004.

Earlier in his career, Webb was a combat Marine in Vietnam, a lawyer, congressional aide and a published author. His appointment as Navy secretary came from President Ronald Reagan, a Republican. But when the Naval Academy graduate made his only run for public office, his upset victory over Allen came as a Democrat.

#NEWS :GOP Rep. Christopher Lee (NY-26) goes topless in pic sent to Craigslist gal pal: report

Talk about citizen outreach.

Married New York Rep. Christopher Lee has been caught hunting for extramarital affairs on Craigslist, according to a bombshell report published by Gawker.

The GOP congressman, who covers the 26th District in Western New York, sent a 34-year-old woman he met on the listings site a shirtless photo of himself, along with emails claiming he's "divorced," a "lobbyist" and a "fit fun classy guy."

Lee's office was not responding to the allegations. The two-term Congressman was "unavailable," as was his press secretary and anyone else in his office, according to the person who picked up the phone at his Longworth House Office Building suite. A spokesman told Gawker that Lee's email account was hacked into.

The woman, who was not identified by the website, placed an ad in the "Women for Men" section of the listings site on Jan. 14, asking someone to prove to her that not all congressional lobbyists "look like toads."

A man named Christopher Lee responded with a photo describing himself as 6 feet tall, 190 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. He also said he was 39 years old and promised "not to disappoint," according to the e-mails published by Gawker.

According to Gawker, the two began a correspondence, but the woman soon ended it after searching for Lee on the Web and realizing he had lied about his age and job.

Lee's office admitted that the Gmail account used did belong to the congressman, but did not explain how a hacker obtained a shirtless photo of Lee. In addition, according to the photo's metadata, it was taken in Washington, D.C., by a BlackBerry smartphone, the type of phone Lee uses.

Lee was elected on a no-nonsense, business-first campaign platform that projected him as candidate devoted to "holding Washington accountable for every dollar it spends."

His official bio claims that Lee picked up his "business expertise" as a general director of his family’s machine-tool firm, Enidine Inc.

Lee lives in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst with his wife, Michele, and young son.

"The congressman is happily married," Lee's spokesman insisted.

Take our Poll

The Arab world's King of Pop - who had publicly dissed Egypt's pro-democracy protests - went to Tahrir Square Wednesday to apologize.

First he was run out with catcalls and punches and had to be saved by the army.

Then he started to cry.

"I want to die today," Tamer Hosny said, blubbering on the video burning up Twitter and YouTube. "I thought I was saving the people."

SEE THE VIDEO

Hosny, 33, an Egyptian singer and film star who is a major superstar in Arab pop, said he was misled about the protests by state media and had written a song for the revolution.

He said the demonstrators misunderstood his intent.

Probably that was because last week, according to Arab music blogs, he called in to Egyptian TV telling the demonstrators to go home and calling President Hosni Mubarak a father figure.

"You have been quiet for 30 years, now you people do this?" he is quoted as saying.

The protesters who have chanted for two weeks against Mubarak began calling the singer "Tamer Hosny Mubarak."

When he took a microphone and tried to address the crowd, they chanted so loudly against him that he had to give up.

Al Jazeera reported the army had to fire warning shots in the air to get the booing crowd to back off and let Hosny leave.

After the video of him crying made the rounds, prominent Egyptian blogger Mahmoud Salem, a Northeastern University grad who tweets from Cairo as "Sandmonkey," quipped,

"One of the great victories of the revolution is that it destroyed Tamer Hosny."

Hosny was supposed to be on a U.S. tour this week, but canceled when revolution roiled his homeland.

In another development Wednesday, union workers began joining Egypt's anti-government protests, calling strikes that were seen as less about Mubarak and more about lousy pay.

Workers walked off the job at the South Cairo Electricity company, the state museum and five of Cairo's 17 public bus garages. Workers also demonstrated at a silk factory and an industrial fuel plant.

In some places, unrest turned violent.

In the southern province of Assiut, some 8,000 protesting farmers blocked the main highway and railway to Cairo with barricades of flaming palm trees. They were angry about bread shortages.

Slum dwellers in Port Said set fire to the governor's headquarters to complain about a lack of housing.

#NEWS: Terror threat in U.S. is highest since 9/11, Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano says

Take our Poll

Efforts to recruit Westerners for attacks against America has skyrocketed the threat of terrorism to its highest level since the 9/11 attacks, warned Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano.

The latest intelligence shows that the threat - from Al Qaeda cells and their allies - is increasingly coming from inside the country, said Napolitano ominously noting that another attack could come "with little or no warning."

"The terrorist threat to the homeland is in many ways at its most heightened state since 9/11," Napolitano said in a speech to the House Homeland Security Committee in Washington Wednesday.

Rep. Peter King (R-NY), chairman of the security committee, called the hearings to explore the threat from Islamic extremists.

Over the past two years, U.S. intelligence agencies have seen a rise in the number of terrorist groups inspired by Al Qaeda who are trying to inspire people with clean records and no obvious links to extremists to launch attacks in the West.

The recruits include Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Christmas Day "underwear bomber" who attempted to blow up a plane over Detroit in 2009, and Faisal Shahzad, who tried to set off a car bomb in Times Square last year.

"This threat of homegrown violent extremism fundamentally changes who is most often in the best position to spot terrorist activity, investigate, and respond," Napolitano said.

As a result, Napolitano said, the DHS needed to work increasingly with state and local law enforcement agencies to fight terrorism using the same techniques police use to fight domestic crime.

Michael Leiter, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, told CNN that the most significant risk was posed by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and its American-born cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki.

The English-speaking Al-Awlaki was linked in emails to both Abdulmutallab and Nidal Hasan, the Army major accused of killing 13 people and wounding 32 in a massacre at Fort Hood, Tex., in 2009.

Shahzad also said he was inspired by Al-Awlaki.

A report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies released Tuesday concluded that Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda has been significantly weakened by drone strikes in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

The report said the primary threats are now Al-Awlaki's group and Somalia's al-Shabaab, which counts dozens of U.S. citizens among its ranks.

The Pakistani Taliban group Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan has also placed a growing emphasis on recruiting Westerners, Napolitano said.

Napolitano also mentioned that DHS was in the process of scrapping the old color-coded alert system in favor of a simpler one that focuses on informing the public as soon as a threat develops.

King urged lawmakers to recognize that "homegrown radicalization is a growing threat, and one we cannot ignore."

Feds: Young Muslims revered NC terrorism leader

  • MIKE BAKER

Associated Press= NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — Daniel Patrick Boyd developed a following in his local Muslim community as believers learned about his time waging war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, and he used that stature to tell young followers about the need for violent jihad, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Boyd has now acknowledged his involvement in supporting and plotting terrorism, pleading guilty in federal court to a pair of charges as prosecutors laid out new details of his activities. The plea provided the government with a crucial conviction against what they have described as a ringleader who guided a Raleigh-area group that sought to wage war against nonbelievers.

Prosecutors said the case illustrated the growing concern of homegrown terrorism.

"The radicalization of Muslims here in our country is a very serious threat," U.S. attorney George Holding said.

More than a half-dozen others have been charged in the case, and most of them were younger than 25 when they were indicted in July 2009, including two of Boyd's sons — Zakariya and Dylan. A trial is scheduled for September. Prosecutors said Boyd is cooperating in the case.

With his once-flowing beard shaven clean and hair slicked back, Boyd tearfully answered a judge's yes-or-no questions before finalizing his guilty plea. He smiled at a few family members in the audience. They declined to comment after the hearing, though his wife has said in the past that he was not involved in terrorism.

Boyd pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide support to terrorists and conspiring to murder, kidnap, maim and injure people. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss several other counts against him. He is to be sentenced in about three months and could serve up to life in prison.

Prosecutors said they had hundreds of recorded phone calls, e-mails and other evidence if the case had gone to trial. They said Boyd had literature in his home or in his e-mail discussing the need for holy war, including some from increasingly prominent figure Anwar al-Awlaki. Holding said Boyd was significantly influenced by al-Awlaki.

National Counterterrorism Center Director Michael Leiter told congressional lawmakers that al-Awlaki's Yemen-based terror organization is the biggest risk to the U.S.

In court, the government focused in part on Boyd's past travels to the Middle East and his claims he fought the remnants of Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Audio tapes played at a previous court hearing included a voice identified as Boyd excitedly telling tales about the fighting.

Because of that stint in Afghanistan two decades ago, prosecutors said Boyd became somewhat of a revered figure in the Raleigh-area Muslim community and that some believers, particularly young ones, turned to him for advice. In turn, Boyd told them of the need to wage violent jihad.

"He did so knowing that he had influence on these young people," said prosecutor John Bowler.

Family members declined to comment while leaving the courthouse.

During an initial court hearing in 2009, federal authorities played audio tapes of Boyd talking about his disgust with the U.S. military, the honor of martyrdom and the need to protect Muslims at all costs. In one, a voice that authorities identified as Boyd says: "I love jihad. I love to stand there and fight for the sake of Allah."

The FBI has said agents seized some two dozen guns and more than 27,000 rounds of ammunition from Boyd's home. Authorities have previously said the men went on training expeditions in the weeks leading up to their arrest, practicing military tactics with armor-piercing bullets on a property in rural North Carolina. They contended he surveyed a Marine Corps base in Virginia and plotted to kill military personnel there.

Boyd grew up in the Washington, D.C., area and converted to Islam as a teenager. He traveled with his family and brother to Pakistan two decades ago.

In 1991, the Boyd brothers were convicted of robbing a bank in Pakistan, but a sentence that included amputations of a hand and foot was overturned.

No Facebook friends for Obama girls

  • WASHINGTON (AP) — Michelle Obama says her daughters are not on Facebook, and that's the way she likes it.

The first lady says her girls, Sasha, 9, and Malia, 12, have certain restrictions that other children do not have because of Secret Service security issues. But she also said during an interview on NBC television on Wednesday that she's "not a big fan of young kids having Facebook."

Even if the girls weren't living in the White House, Mrs. Obama says Facebook is "not something they need." Maybe when they get older, she added.

In any case the Obama daughters are too young to be on Facebook because users of the social network have to be 13.

#NEWS : ussia U-turns over Guardian journalist's deportation

Decision to grant Luke Harding an extension to his visa comes just before a rare visit to UK by Russian foreign minister

Russia's foreign ministry has reversed its decision to deport the Guardian's Moscow correspondent, saying that Luke Harding would be granted an extension to his visa to carry on reporting if the newspaper wanted him to.

The U-turn came just before a rare visit by Russia's foreign minister to the UK and follows widespread criticism from British politicians of the journalist's removal.

Alexander Lukashevich, a spokesman for the ministry, said the country was ready to issue a visa so Harding could "continue his activity for the amount of time his tenure in Russia has been extended".

On Tuesday Harding had been told that he would only be allowed to return to Russia until his visa expired at the end of May – with the foreign ministry blaming the journalist for failing to take a press card with him before going abroad.

Last weekend Harding was deported when he returned to Russia after a stint in London reporting on the WikiLeaks cables, becoming the first journalist employed by a newspaper or broadcaster to be kicked out of the country since the end of the cold war.

In December the Guardian published an article by Harding, based on the contents of the leaked US diplomatic cables, which reported that the prime minister, Vladimir Putin, was likely to have known about the planned assassination of Alexander Litvinenko because of his "attention to detail".

The Guardian said: "We welcome the offer from the Russian foreign ministry to give our Moscow correspondent, Luke Harding, a new visa so he may continue to work in Russia. Luke and the Guardian are now considering the offer very carefully."

The row has threatened to overshadow the visit of Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, who is due in the UK for a diplomatic visit early next week.
