President Rafael Correa was caught

Ecuador President injured in ‘coup’

President Rafael Correa was caught in a tear gas attack as Ecuadoran troops took over the main international airport in the country’s capital Quito while police protested in the streets.

President Rafael Correa denounced what he called “a coup attempt” against his government, and, fearing, for his life sought refuge in a hospital.

Scores of soldiers swarmed over the landing strip of the international airport, forcing it to close. Witnesses said there was looting in Quito and in the city of Guayaquil, and that many workers and school students were being sent home.

Elsewhere in Quito, uniformed police burned tires in protest at a proposal to cut their bonuses.

Despite the protests, the head of the Armed forces said the troops remained loyal to President Rafael Correa who was caught in a tear gas attack.

According to reports, Mr Correa claimed he was being targeted, that protesters were looking for him in hospital and will be responsible if he is hurt.

Ecuador has a history of political instability, with street protests toppling three presidents in the decade before Mr Correa took power. Mr Correa denounced the unrest as a “coup attempt led by the opposition and certain sections of the armed forces and the police.”

Members of Mr Correa’s own left-wing party are blocking legislative proposals aimed at cutting state costs, prompting him to mull disbanding Congress, a move that would let him rule by decree until new elections, one of his ministers said.
