Japan’s nuclear safety agency says an explosion has been heard at Unit 2 of the Fukushima nuclear plant, adding to fears of a nuclear meltdown.

The Japanese government has also said that part of one of the reactor’s containers appears to be damaged, raising fears of a serious radiation leak.

Japan has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to send a team of experts to help in the current crisis.

Meanwhile, the search for survivors of the earthquake and tsunami that followed is continuing in Japan.

In one of the worst hit areas, two thousand bodies have been found and tens of thousands of people are still missing in the north west.

At a press conference after the latest explosion at the Fukushima plant, reporters were told most staff have been told to leave.
