Motorola unveils smartphone Droid X

SAN FRANCISCO, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Motorola on Wednesday unveiled Droid X, its latest smartphone running on Google's Android operating system.

Featuring a 4.3-inch high-resolution screen, the handset is one of the largest smartphone on the market.

The Droid X is equipped with an 8-megapixel camera and has access to Android Market, which has more than 65,000 applications.

"Motorola designed Droid X to push the extreme limits of Android innovation, and enable you to do even more with your mobile device," Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola, said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless carrier in the United States, announced that it will sell the Droid X at its website and stores beginning from July 15.

The phone will cost about 200 U.S. dollars after a 100-dollar mail-in rebate with a two-year contract.

The debut of Droid X came a day before Apple is scheduled to sell its iPhone 4 in the U.S., France, Germany, Japan and Britain Thursday, further heating up the competition on the smartphone market.
