Taiwan Jolted by 6.4 Quake

TAIPEI -- An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit the Kaohsiung area in southern Taiwan early Thursday, the island's Central Weather Bureau said.

The earthquake lasted for 53 seconds, it said.

The bureau said the earthquake's intensity was measured two on the Richter Scale in Taiwan's capital city Taipei and in Hsinchu, where many of the island's technology companies are located.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
