Earthquake Rattles Chile’s Capital

SANTIAGO – A magnitude-5.1 earthquake rattled Santiago, other parts of the metropolitan area and Valparaiso early Tuesday, but no injuries or damage were reported, Chilean officials said.

The temblor happened at 2:37 a.m. and its epicenter was located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the town of Los Andes and some 117 kilometers (73 miles) from Santiago, the University of Chile’s Seismology Institute said.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 100 kilometers (62 miles), the institute said.

The quake was felt across the Santiago metropolitan area and in Valparaiso, located northwest of the capital, the National Emergency Management Office, or Onemi, said. EFE
