Strong quake hits northwest ChinaBEIJING - A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit a remote part of northwest China on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said. The quake struck at 8.21am (0021 GMT, 8.21am Singapore time) around 96 kilometres (59 miles) east of the city of Yining in China’s Xinjiang region, at a depth of 27 kilometres, USGS said. Xinjiang is a vast region with a population of around 20 million, of which roughly nine million are Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking mainly Muslim ethnic minority. A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the region in August, injuring at least 26 people, three of them critically, and destroying more than 30 residential buildings. |

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of Ili, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 8:21 a.m. Tuesday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was monitored at about 43.6 degrees north latitude and 82.4 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement.
