Gunmen kill at least seven Russian police officers in Dagestan
Policemen escort a gang member injured in a fire in a juvenile prison in Ilobasco, north of San Salvador.
At least 16 people have been killed and 22 others injured after a deadly fire razed through a juvenile detention center in northern El Salvador.
The incident took place on Wednesday at 6:00 a.m. local time in the rehabilitation center in the Ilobasco city of the Cabanas department, north of the capital San Salvador.
"We arrived in the middle of the emergency and we have seen 16 dead. The 22 injured suffered burns and are receiving treatment," AFP quoted a rescue official, Carlos Fuentes, as saying on Wednesday.
"Inside the center, the inmates were screaming in desperation and pleading for help, but we were unable to enter because we had to coordinate with security," the official added.
The center is believed to hold inmates belonging to gangs like Mara Salvatrucha and its main rival, Mara 18.
The victims were aged between 18 and 25.
Red Cross spokesman, Carlos Mendoza, has also said that as many as 10 survivors are in critical condition and are being treated in the capital San Salvador.
Human rights prosecutor, Oscar Luna, said that the government would launch a probe into the cause of the rather long delay in entering the facility.
"I think the response did not take place in a timely fashion -- not in terms of the opening of the facility to take out the inmates, or even in terms of the time it took firefighters to arrive," the official argued.
The exact cause of the incident is not yet clear. However, initial reports indicate the fire was accidental and may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, while the inmates were asleep.
