Vietnam, Belarus bilateral trade surges fourfold in first four months

HANOI, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Belarus jumped fourfold from a year earlier to 35.9 million U.S. dollars in the first four months of this year, according to a report of the General Department of Vietnam Customs on Tuesday.

Between January and April, Vietnam spent 31.9 million U.S. dollars on goods import from Belarus, representing a 5.3-fold rise compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Vietnam earned nearly four million U.S. dollars from exporting goods to Belarus, up 50 percent from the same time last year, the department said. Vietnam's major exports to Belarus were seafood, wood and wood products, vegetables and coffee while the country imported fertilizers, automobiles and spare parts, and machines and equipment from Belarus.

Due to impacts of the global economic downturn, the two-way trade reached 76 million U.S. dollars last year, a 27.5 percent fall from a year earlier, according to the department.
