Albanian opposition ends hunger strike

TIRANA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Albanian opposition Socialist Party announced Wednesday evening that it has ended a 19-day hunger strike over an alleged fraud from last year's election.

Edi Rama, the leader of the Socialist Party, said he and Prime Minister Sali Berisha will travel to Strasbourg on Thursday to seek a settlement to the stalemate.

"The international community is expecting both parties to find a solution," Rama told supporters in Tirana on Wednesday.

About 20 opposition parliamentary members and 180 of their supporters have gone on a hunger strike since the beginning of this month in tents outside the office building of the prime minister.

The Socialist Party has accused the ruling Democratic Party of vote-rigging in last year's elections and called for a partial recount of the votes. Berisha denied any wrong play in the elections.
