TEHRAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Deputy Manager of Iran's Red Crescent Society Heydar Heydari said that Iran sent first shipment of humanitarian aid to Libya, the English language satellite Press TV reported on Saturday.

The Iranian shipment sent to the Tunisian border with Libya on Friday night included 36 tons of medical supplies and food stuff, Heydari told Press TV.

Iran was ready to send its second cargo, but it needs to know exactly what items are in need, he said.

"Secretary General of the Libyan Red Crescent Abdul Hameed al- Madani told us on Thursday that they need our assistance. Today the aid and our team will fly to Tunisia. The Iranian relief workers will also set up a border camp for the displaced on the Libyan-Tunisian border," Heydari was quoted as saying.

NATO has taken command from the United States of the ongoing multinational military intervention in Libya, which saw coalition warplanes strike Libyan targets for the eighth straight day.
