"On arrival, officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene,"

Amy Jade Winehouse was born in Southgate in North London on September 14 1983. While she spent her childhood with her parents Mitch and Janis, it was until she was 19 that she signed with Simon Fuller's 19 management and started her career as a professional musician and singer.

Her debut album Frank was released on 20 October 2003, leading to Winehouse being nominated for several categories at the 2004 BRIT awards as well as achieving platinum sales. This was then followed by her album Back to Black in 2006, which became the best selling UK album in 2007.

After the success of Back to Black Winehouse won three Grammy awards in 2008 for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Rehab". She's been credited with the revival of soul music in the UK as well as inspiring other top-selling musicians such as Adele, VV Brown and Florence and the Machine.

Unfortunately, Winehouse soon became just as famous for her antics off stage as she was for her work on it. Her drinking, drug use and weight loss has been well documented by the press since early 2005, and seemingly continued right up until her death. Signs of this surfaced in 2007 when she cancelled much of her European tour citing exhaustion, although she was then hospitalised for what was reported as an overdose of ketamine, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and alcohol.

This was then followed by supposed videos of the singer smoking crack cocaine and talking about having taken ecstasy and valium and then Winehouse entering rehab in late 2008. Her last visit to a rehabilitation clinic was on the 25th May this year (2011).

Winehouse's love life turned out to be just as complicated as her battle with addiction, as she married on-off boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil in May 2007, who was quoted as being the person who introduced her to crack cocaine and heroin. After Fielder-Civil's imprisonment in mid-2008 Winehouse was spotted with various men, including actor Josh Bowman and more recently director Reg Traviss. Winehouse divorced Fielder-Civil in July 2009.

Finally, while Amy Winehouse may have eventually become more famous for her drug taking and wild partying than for her music, it is almost certainly her music that she will be remembered for in the years to come. There's no doubt in most people's minds that Back to Black has some of the best British songs to have come out in the country for the last decade, and even now, she's viewed as an insipration to many young musicians, both British and abroad.
