PUYALLUP, Wash. – Explosives have been found buried outside an abandoned well house, closing down a Puyallup road Friday.
Puyallup Police say the explosives were found just before 2 p.m. in the 2200 block of Shaw Road. The road is closed between 16th Avenue SE and 23rd Avenue SE.
The ATF found two or three devices that appeared to be shrink-wrapped or duct-taped with wires coming out of them. The discovery came after a tip that someone had buried the items on the property.
According to the ATF, the explosives relate to an incident two years ago in which a bounty hunter shot and killed a man. Officials have not said whether the explosives belonged to the man.
Two homes were specifically evacuated, but other nearby residents are being asked to shelter in place. Drivers are advised to avoid the area due to traffic congestion. Cheryl Bishop with the ATF said, for the time being, they are operating under an abundance of caution.
"If we had any belief that they were in any type of danger we would certainly evacuate the area, but that's not called for at this point," said Bishop. She said the operation could take several hours.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad and the ATF are investigating.
