US classified military files leaked on website

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Classified US documents that were leaked to a website, have offered a never-seen-before look at the Afghan War. However, the White House is warning the move could threaten US national security.

Wikileaks.org collected 91-thousand documents from the US military in Afghanistan, covering the war from 2004 to 2010.

The documents were made available first to The New York Times, Britain's The Guardian newspaper and German weekly Der Spiegel.

The logs revealed US officials' suspicion that Pakistan's spy agency has for years guided the Afghan insurgency. Also included were statements that US troops covered up evidence that the Taliban had acquired and used heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles to target coalition aircraft, as well as a secret battalion led by US special forces to kill or capture top Taliban targets without trial.

The Guardian newspaper says the leaks reveal unreported incidents of Afghan civilians killed by NATO forces.

The White House responded with a strong condemnation of the leak, saying it could threaten national security and endanger the lives of Americans and those of its allies.

Pakistan's ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani said the leak of unprocessed reports from the battlefield was irresponsible. He added the documents "do not reflect the current on-ground realities." He also maintained the United States, Afghanistan and Pakistan are "jointly endeavoring to defeat al-Qaida and its Taliban allies militarily and politically."
