ABC to "Lost" fans: Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

The Disney-owned network cleared up the reason behind the montage of the Oceanic 815 crash site photos that ran with the closing credits to the show's series finale.

"The images shown during the end credits of the 'Lost' finale, which included shots of Oceanic 815 on a deserted beach, were not part of the final story," an ABC spokesperson told the Los Angles Times via e-mail on Tuesday.

So, what were they all about?

The images were simply a "visual aid" to ease the transition between the dramatic final minutes of the last episode and the local news, the spokesperson explained.

Many fans - and even some reviewers - were left confused by the montage, which showed the elaborate crash site of flight 815 from the show's first season. Some concluded that they were meant to suggest that the "survivors" actually died in the original crash.

The show clearly stated this was not the case, but that didn't stop some from scratching their heads.

"Lost" scored 13.5 million viewers for its last episode, beating the totals for the final episodes of "24" and "Law & Order," both of which aired this week.
