Forecasters issued a tropical storm watch for southeastern Newfoundland Sunday for a weakened Hurricane Ophelia as the Category 1 storm headed toward Atlantic Canada.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre said Sunday night that Ophelia's top sustained winds had dropped to 148 km/h and it was moving north-northeast at 50 km/h.
As of 9:30 p.m. NT, Ophelia was centred about about 120 kilometres southeast of Sable Island, and a tropical storm watch was in effect for the Avalon Peninsula.
CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said residents could expect a period of heavy rain over eastern Newfoundland on Monday morning, likely between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. local time.
The hurricane centre said there is about a 70 per cent chance of tropical storm force winds — about 60 gusting to 90 km/h — over the Avalon Peninsula. But it said the chance of hurricane-force gusts of about 120 km/h is only 20 per cent, mainly because the maximum winds should remain offshore.
On Saturday, a spokesman for the Canadian Hurricane Centre said there could be torrential rains of up to 100 millimetres as the storm tracks close to southeastern Newfoundland at the start of the work week.
"The largest waves will affect Newfoundland," said Chris Fogarty, program supervisor with the centre, in a teleconference from Dartmouth, N.S.
Calling it a "strong, compact, intense storm," Fogarty said Ophelia could affect the eastern shores of Nova Scotia on Sunday evening before heading north to Newfoundland.
While Fogarty spoke of possible local flooding in Newfoundland, the centre did not issue any official warnings connected to Ophelia.

HALIFAX — Canadian Hurricane Centre says Hurricane Ophelia is expected to pass near Newfoundland early Monday as a strong post-tropical storm.
The centre says Ophelia has weakened to a Category 1 storm with top sustained winds of about 130 kilometres an hour. The storm is moving north-northeast at 54 kilometres an hour.
Environment Canada says the storm could still pack enough punch to bring heavy rain and gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour.
Large waves are also anticipated along the south coast of Newfoundland.
Ophelia is centred about 530 kilometres southwest of Cape Race, N.L., and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Philippe was moving over the central Atlantic and is not expected to affect land.
