#Indonesia declares emergency response in #tsunami-hit area

AKARTA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian government declared an emergency response in the tsunami-affected area of Mentawai isles in West Sumatra within 14 days after the status was declared, an Indonesian senior official said on Tuesday.

After receiving orders from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is now on his visit program to China and Vietnam, Indonesian Public Welfare Minister Agung Laksono declared an emergency response.

The emergency response is aimed at easing the mitigation efforts towards the victims of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake followed by tsunami on Monday night.

The minister planned to visit the tsunami-stricken area within two days, to bring the relief aid to the victims directly. He said the only possible transport to the tsunami-hit area was by helicopter.

"The tide is still high. It would endanger ships carrying relief aid to the victims in Mentawai isles. We have prepared food, blankets, clothes, drinking water for the victims. The social minister has also sent 500 million rupiah (about 50,000 U.S. dollars) of fund to finance the relief efforts," the public welfare minister was quoted by the detik.com as saying.

The latest report said the tsunami and earthquake in Memtawai isles has claimed 40 lives with more than 380 people reported missing, following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Monday night.

JAKARTA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tsunami after strong quake in West Sumatra of Indonesia on Monday evening killed 23 people and left 169 others missing, emergency relief aids will be sent immediately, officials said on Tuesday.

The tsunami hit two islands of Pagaiselatan Mentawai and Pagaiutara Mentawai in West Sumatra after the 7.2 magnitude quake, West Sumatra Disaster and Mitigation Management Agency Ade Edward told Xinhua by phone from West Sumatra. The USGS reported the quake was 7.7 magnitude. "The latest data of casualty now is 23 people and we are searching the 169 others," he said.

Head of crisis center of the health Ministry Mujiharjo said that 12 medical men from Padang the capital of West Sumatra will leave for the island at 17:00 p.m. Jakarta time.

The Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency admitted that small tsunamis occurred five minutes after the main shock at 7.2 magnitude at 21:42 p.m. Jakarta time Monday (1442 GMT), although it lifted the warning about a half hour after the main shock.

West Sumatra was hit by powerful quake of 7.9 magnitude in September 2009, killing more than one thousand people and caused massive damages on infrastructures.


Tsunami kills at least 40, leaves 380 people missing in Indonesia's W. Sumatra




JAKARTA, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Strong earthquake on Monday has triggered tsunami in remote district of West Sumatra and killed at least 40 people and left 380 others missing.

Private television station MetroTV who had interviewed Hendri Dori Satoko, speaker of regional parliament of Kepulauan Mentawai regency, reported that the search and rescue team is still searching the missing people.

"Based on report I received, at least 40 people are killed while 380 are missing," Satoko said.

High tide put obstacle on the SAR team to reach the tsunami location. Edison Salileo Baja, regent of Kepulauan Mentawai urged people to stay calm.

"Don't be too scared," said Baja. Metrotvnews.com quoted Joskamatir, head of Disaster Mitigation of Mentawai regency's Pagai Selatan area, that seven people out of 40 villagers of Muntai village were killed while they were fishing.

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency admitted that small tsunamis occurred five minutes after the main shock which was measured at 7.2 magnitude at 21:42 p.m. Jakarta time Monday (1442 GMT), although it lifted the warning about a half hour after the main shock.

The quake epicenter was located at 78 km southwest Pagaiselatan Mentawai and at a depth of 10 km under sea bed, the agency said. The US Geological Survey reported the quake was measured at 7.7 with deeper position at 14.2 km under sea bed.

"The tsunami occurred with the height at 0.461 meter," an official of the agency named only Sutiyono told Xinhua by phone.

But, a report said that the height of the waters reached 3 meters high in Silabu village at Pagaiutara Mentawai island, head of crisis center of Health Ministry named only Mujiharjo told Xinhua by phone.

Edward said that the tsunami also destroyed one bridge, five houses. But, head of crisis center said that 80 percent houses at Betumonga village at Pagaiutara Mentawai island have been leveled.

One tourist boat loaded by 10 Australian citizens and five crews has lost contact, he said.
