#news: Iran raps GCC's claim over disputed islands

TEHRAN, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast rejected on Wednesday a Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) communique which supports claims by the United Arab Emirates to three disputed islands, the English language satellite Press TV reported.

"Such statements and declarations would not affect Iran's sovereignty and authority over the islands whatsoever and repetition of such phony claims would not contribute to the restoration of peace and stability in the region," Mehmanparast was quoted as saying.

Refuting the move as unfounded, the spokesman emphasized Iran's permanent sovereignty over the three islands, Greater and Lesser Tonbs and Abu Moussa.

Mehmanparast, however, declared the Islamic Republic's readiness to hold positive and constructive talks with the UAE with the aim of fostering and broadening bilateral relations, according to the report.

Leaders of the six-member GCC on Tuesday wrapped up their two- day summit in the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi with a support to the UAE's claims to three disputed islands that have been under Iran's control since early 1970.

The dispute over the islands should be solved via direct negotiations or international arbitration, the leaders said in the communique.
