Kenya arrests suspected German terrorist

NAIROBI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Kenyan authorities have arrested a German suspected to be involved in terrorism , saying that the suspect would be deported soon.

Police spokesman Erick Kiraithe said the 23-year-old Sascha Alessadro Bottcher was arrested on Tuesday in the coastal town of Mtwapa following a countrywide alert, saying the suspect would be deported soon.

"Based on the information we have received, the Kenyan Police would like to alert the public that there is a wanted terror suspect in the country," Kiraithe said in a statement.

He said the German speaking suspect is a Muslim convert who arrived in Kenya through Moi International Airport, Mombasa in Sept. on Passport No. C6W9JVGLG6D.

Bottcher's whereabouts had remained unknown and the authoritires said they were apprehensive because he wrote a will before leaving Germany, indicating he was headed for Somalia and he would not return alive.

"The blue-eyed suspect is slim, stands at 175cms tall and weighs 68kgs. He has brown hair colour and wears shoe size 43," the statement said.

The Kenyan authorities has sent an urgent appeal to the public to immediately divulge any information that may lead to his apprehension.

Analysts say the absence of an effective law to bring terrorism suspects to book has forced Kenyan security agencies to resort to a series of deportations and secret renditions to neighboring states after failing to secure a single conviction from dozens of suspects seized over the years.

Despite running one of the most over-zealous counter-terrorism agencies in the Horn of Africa region, the Kenyan anti-terror agents have consistently arrested suspects but failed to secure a single conviction in a court of law on a terrorism charge.
