Brazilian committee probes former chief of staff over scandal

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian president's Ethics Committee Friday decided on Friday to investigate former presidential Chief of Staff Erenice Guerra, who resigned Thursday amid an influence- peddling scandal.

The committee unanimously voted to turn the preliminary inquiry into an official investigation and planned to give an ethical warning to Guerra for not providing her private information when she took over as chief of staff in late March.

The Veja magazine and the Folha de Sao Paulo daily accused Guerra and her son Israel Guerra of receiving kickbacks from a company, which obtained a lucrative government contract.

Guerra denied the allegation and decided to step down to properly defend herself and her family. She will have 10 days to present her defense against the accusation.
