U.S. prosecutor says Russia spy suspect confessed

NEW YORK, July 1 (Xinhua) -- A suspect in the Russia spy saga has confessed that he was a Russian agent operating under a false identity, U.S. prosecutors said Thursday.

The suspect told investigators that he would not violate his loyalty to Russian secret service "although he loved his son," Attorney Preet Bharara said in a letter to Judge Ronald Ellis on the confession of the suspect.

The suspect operated under the false identity of Juan Lazaro, and his wife Vicky Pelzez, a Peruvian journalist, went to South America several times to give intelligence to other agents, said the prosecutor.

The two are among 11 suspects charged with working as agents gathering intelligence in the United States to report back to Moscow, in a spy case that has made headlines and risks harming U.S.-Russian relations.
