Armed men kill 5 civilians in E. Afghanistan

KHOST, Afghanistan, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Unknown armed men killed five non-combatants in Afghanistan's eastern Khost province, a local official Mohammad Nawab said Sunday.

"The gruesome incident occurred in Lakan village outside Khost provincial capital the Khost city Saturday night," Nawab told Xinhua.

All the victims were daily wagers, the official further said.

He blamed the enemies of peace, a term used against Taliban militants for the bloody incident but the insurgents have yet to make comment.

Meantime, locals said that all the victims were members of same family.

Conflicts and Taliban-related violent incidents have been on the rise since the spring onset in the war-torn Afghanistan.

Taliban militants announced early this month to launch their spring offensive dubbed as "Al-Faath" or victory and the operation, according to the outfit's statement would be launched mostly in the shape of suicide attacks and roadside bombings.
