Actress Brittany Murphy is dead at 32.

The Los Angeles fire department received a 911 call at 8 a.m. Sunday morning from a home owned by Murphy's husband.

She was pronounced dead from cardiac arrest on arrival at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Murphy's mother discovered her unconscious in the shower, gossip website TMZ reported.

Murphy was known for her roles in movies such as Clueless, Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile and Sin City. She was due to appear in five films in the upcoming year, but was recently replaced by Canadian actress Rachelle Lefevre on The Caller, currently filming.

Murphy's publicist denied rumours she had been fired from The Caller, for reasons ranging from "she was difficult on set" to "her husband fought with the locals in Puerto Rico." But while Murphy did leave the project, her publicist denied the decision had anything to do with bad behaviour.

"The allegations currently circulating on the Internet about Brittany Murphy and her husband, Simon Monjack, read like a fictional plot from one of the 50 plus movies Ms Murphy has successfully completed without incident," the rep told OK! Magazine.

"She was not, nor has she ever been, fired from any job big or small. Monjack did not engage in any alleged scuffles.

Though due to creative differences, Ms. Murphy and the production mutually parted ways.

Her replacement Lefevre has a Vancouver connection, having starred in the locally filmed instalment of the Twilight series, New Moon.

Murphy was the subject of drug rumours in 2005 after losing considerable weight, and addressed them by telling Jane magazine: "No, just for the record I have never tried it in my entire life, I've never even seen it, and I don't leave the house too much, except to go to work."

TMZ says the LA coroner will begin an investigation into Murphy's death today.

Murphy has been married to screen writer Simon Monjack since 2007 and has no children.
