Hotel As Janelas Verdes (translated as the Green Windows) is a small 18th century palace located in the typically pretty street of the same name in Lisbon. It is also next to the Museum of Ancient Art – a world-class museum and, along with the Gulbenkian, Lisbon’s finest. The Lisbon hotel certainly has a strong cultural and literary tradition. Eça de Queiros, the great 19th century Portuguese novelist is said to have lived there and based the magical home “O Ramalhete”, in his novel "the Maias", on As Janelas Verdes. The old wing of Hotel As Janelas Verdes, with its small objets d’art, paintings and mementoes takes us back to a period when life seemed to be less rushed and more refined. The new wing, though it has a more contemporary decoration and feel, still blends in flawlessly with the existing atmosphere. All 17 rooms have a light airy feel, are very tastefully decorated and provide for some delightful personal touches. The do not disturb sign, for example, is simply a cushion with the word “schhh…”. The upper terrace on the new wing further provides some great views of Lisbon and the river Tagus, whilst the small garden of Hotel As Janelas Verdes is an excellent place to breath in the calm of old Lisbon and enjoy breakfast.

Ali mesmo ao lado do Museu de Arte Antiga, na belíssima Rua das Janelas Verdes, encontra-se um pequeno palacete dos finais de setecentos: As Janelas Verdes é também o seu nome.

Tal como a rua, a casa merece ser descoberta sem pressas, a pouco e pouco, "saboreando" este suave ambiente acolhedor e romântico.

Eça de Queirós está já por tradição a ela ligado e há quem afirme que o famoso romancista viveu aqui e se inspirou neste palacete para a composição de uma outra casa mágica, "O Ramalhete" de "Os Maias".

A memória dessa presença está viva na atmosfera que nos envolve : pequenos objectos de arte, livros, quadros, recordações que nos remetem para um outro tempo agora revisitado.

Os quartos são alegres e soalheiros, o Tejo está ali perto de nós, sabe-nos bem esta casa...

E quando chega a Primavera, os dias aqui começam com um pequeno almoço de sonho servido no jardim, respirando a calma de uma Lisboa antiga onde ainda é bom amar.
