Syria: UN to vote amid fresh violence

Anti-government activists describe violence in Homs as a "real massacre"
The UN Security Council is expected to vote later on Saturday on a resolution backing an Arab League peace plan for Syria, amid reports of more than 200 people killed by shelling in Homs.
The draft resolution calls on President Bashar al-Assad to hand power to a deputy to oversee a transition.
Russia has objected to earlier versions of the text and it is not clear how it will vote, or if it will abstain.
Meanwhile, violent protests have broken out at several Syrian embassies.
About 20 protesters forced their way into the Syrian embassy in Berlin late on Friday and damaged offices, police said.
German TV showed a Syrian resistance flag hanging from one of the windows and graffiti sprayed on the outside of the building.
Around 150 demonstrators also gathered outside the Syrian embassy in London early on Saturday and five people were arrested after entering the building.
German police surround protesters outside the Syrian embassy. About 20 protesters forced their way into the Syrian embassy in Berlin
Rallies also broke out outside Syrian embassies in Cairo and Madrid. In Cairo, protesters stormed the building, smashing furniture and setting fire to parts of the building.
The protests followed reports of a bombardment in the Syrian city of Homs, which activists described as "a massacre".
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian forces were firing mortars into the district of Khalidiyya and some buildings were set on fire. It said women and children were among more than 200 dead.
Rami Abdulrahman, head of the observatory, called for the "immediate intervention" of the Arab League to end the violence.
The reports cannot be independently verified. However, footage broadcast on the Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya TV channels showed dozens of bodies on the ground.
UN 'momentum' The BBC's UN correspondent Barbara Plett says momentum for the UN vote has been building in recent days.
Russia - Syria's strongest ally on the council - has objected to parts of the latest draft but did not put forward any revisions, so a vote was called for 09:00 EST (14:00 GMT) on Saturday.
Moscow has previously vetoed UN resolutions on Syria but there is a feeling now that things could be different, our correspondent adds.
UN Security Council The UN Security Council has been engaged in intense negotiations over the resolution
On Thursday, Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told diplomats he would veto the resolution if it were put to a vote on Friday in its current form.
It is believed Moscow objects to the phrase which says the council "fully supports" the Arab League plan.
On Friday, the Russian Interfax news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov as saying that the draft was "not enough for us to be able to support it in this form".
However, by Friday evening the Russian delegation had not presented any new wording, diplomats said.
Moscow has continued to supply weapons to Syria despite the uprising there.
Syria has been gripped by nationwide protests against President Assad's regime for almost a year.
The UN stopped estimating the death toll after it passed 5,400 in January, saying it was too difficult to confirm numbers.
The Syrian government says at least 2,000 members of its security forces have been killed fighting "armed gangs and terrorists".

Syria blames massacre on armed gunmen

SYRIA'S government denies that its army bombarded the central city of Homs, instead blaming the bloodshed on "armed gunmen," state media report.
The government "denies shelling by the army in certain districts of Homs, as peddled by television stations that are inciting violence," the official SANA news agency said, after rights groups reported that more than 200 civilians were killed in the assault on the protest hub.
"The civilians shown by satellite television stations are citizens who were kidnapped and killed by armed gunmen," said SANA.

Mass atrocities across Syria

Reports flood in of premeditated mass murder by forces loyal to the Bashar Al-Assad regime in restive areas across Syria

Syrian military and security forces have escalated their crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in an attempt to take control of areas where unrest and clashes continue between citizens and the forces of the Damascus regime, Bassel Oudat reports. Meanwhile, revolutionary forces accuse the state's security agencies of committing massacres in several areas in Syria, saying that entire families were wiped out, including children and women, and that dozens of unidentified corpses were found in areas under the control of security forces and militias loyal to the regime.
The first massacre was reported this week by the Local Coordination Committees where armed militias loyal to the regime raided Karm Al-Zaytoun district in Homs (central Syria) and randomly opened fire. They then reportedly entered one home and killed 14 people in one family (the Bahader family), including eight children between the ages of eight months and five years old. Activists uploaded gruesome video footage of five corpses of children with wounds to the head and neck, as well as three corpses of three women and one man.
Residents said that armed men raided the district after military forces fired heavy mortar shells at the area and killed 16 other people. One local doctor reported there were 70 wounded at a field hospital in the district and that the field hospital itself was the target of mortar attacks.
Karm Al-Zaytoun is one of the centres of protest and has the largest number of prisoners in the city; it neighbours districts that are loyal to the regime. It is also surrounded by a large number of security barricades enforced with tanks, armoured vehicles and heavy artillery.
At another location, the Union of Syrian Revolution Coordinators reported that the area of Duhur Al-Maabur near Rankus in rural Damascus was also the site of a massacre. Local residents were surrounded by the army, security forces and militias and 33 people were killed, mostly army defectors. The full names of most of the victims were documented and some of their bodies were covered with snow.
In southern Syria, in the town of Nawa in rural Deraa, military and security forces carried out premeditated mass executions on Friday and opened fire at the local cemetery during the funeral of a victim. Some 14 locals were killed, including the grandmother of the deceased, his aunt and a number of his relatives and neighbours. No one knows why military and security forces opened fire.
Last week, residents of the town of Edleb (north Syria) raided the government hospital that was controlled by security forces and were able to chase them out as they searched for their relatives. They found more than 30 unidentified corpses in the hospital morgue, some of who had died a month earlier. During the raid, more locals were killed and later the identities of some of those killed were revealed to be detainees from neighbouring villages who were killed after their arrest by security forces.
In a similar incident, the residents of Hama (central Syria) found 23 unidentified bodies at the end of last week with their hands bound, a shot to the head, and torture marks on their bodies.
There have been daily anti-regime protests at the coastal city of Latakia, and on Saturday another bloodbath took place. According to local residents and human rights monitors, civilian militias loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad raided the home of Dr Moed Tayei who was arrested in September for treating victims, and burned the house down with people still inside.
The attack killed his four children between the ages of eight months and 10 years old, and tens of thousands of people took part in the funeral procession of the children while their father was absent. Activists created a page on social networks called "Birds of Heaven, the children of Dr Tayei" in an expression of solidarity with the victims and their father.
The death of the children brings to 475 the number of children killed by Syrian forces since the start of the nascent revolution in mid-March 2011. They include 32 children who were killed last week alone after an escalation of military operations that left hundreds of victims. UNICEF reported that a similar number of children have been arrested, some of whom are younger than 14 years old, while the UN said it can no longer report exact figures because of the perpetual rise in the number of victims.
Last week's massacres are not the first of their kind. In the past, the residents of Deraa discovered mass graves for entire families, and residents in Homs also found mass graves of civilians and members of the military. While the Syrian opposition blames security forces and militias loyal to the regime for the massacres, Syrian authorities blame "armed terrorist groups" for the killings.
According to the Syrian Association for Human Rights, the number of protesters killed in Syria until 23 January 2012 has risen to 6,729, including 456 children and 316 women, as well as 742 among military ranks who refused to kill civilians. Reports indicate that 4,553 were killed with bullets; 817 with shrapnel; 715 for refusing to open fire; 414 from torture; 95 by artillery attacks; 66 of injuries; 11 because of lack of medical supplies; 11 from burns; nine were ran over by tanks; seven after inhaling tear gas; six by power outages at neo-natal units; five were ran over by cars; four by knife stabbings; three by nail bombs; two from bomb shrapnel; and two had their throats slit.
Syrian and international human rights organisations accuse the Syrian regime of committing crimes against humanity and demand that the leaders of the Syrian regime and senior security officials stand trial at the International Criminal Court.
Activists and opposition figures assert that security and military forces are using light and heavy artillery in their attempt to crack down on protests and muzzle the opposition. Also, that they open fire at random in most incidents, prevent medical attention to the injured, and kill prisoners. They back these accusations with video footage documenting random shootings.
The rate of mass executions and deaths has increased the likelihood that the anti-regime protest movement demanding democracy will escalate into civil war. Observers believe that the day is near when civilian anti-regime protesters and families of victims take up arms to confront security forces, urging the world community to shoulder the political, legal and moral responsibility of taking a firm action to deter the Syrian regime. Many also demand that regime crimes be referred to international courts capable of uncovering the truth and punishing the perpetrators.

The Arab League has confirmed it is suspending its monitoring mission in Syria because of "the critical deterioration of the situation". The pan-Arab bloc also says it is holding talks with Russia - one of the main opponents of the Arab League peace plan - ahead of a United Nations meeting in New York on Monday. Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said an embargo on arms supplies to Syria is out of the question -- along with any resolution that could threaten to aggravate conflict in the country. Churkin, speaking to journalists via video link, spoke out strongly against a possible arms embargo on Syria, citing some countries' refusal to condemn the armed groups operating there, and the continued risk of weapons supplies reaching these groups despite any ban. When most nations talk about sovereignty, they seem to think that "sovereignty is good for friends" while "compliance is good for enemies," believes Benjamin Barber, a senior fellow at the American think-tank Demos. The dust has still not settled in the suburbs of Damascus, which in recent days has seen some of the fiercest fighting, claiming scores of lives. And as the unrest runs high, Moscow has offered itself as a stage for dialogue between the regime and the opposition, who are currently rejecting talks with President Assad. The idea of the Syrian opposition dancing to the foreign drum is shared by John R. Bradley, author of the book 'After the Arab Spring'. Free Syrian Army says it captured five Iranian soldiers
Free Syrian Army says it captured five Iranian soldiers
Members of the Free Syrian Army say they have taken hostage seven Iranians, five of whom were allegedly soldiers complicit in the Syrian government's military crackdown on protesters in the opposition-controlled city of Homs. The Farouk Brigade of the FSA, an umbrella group of members of the country's security forces who defected to protect civilians from the government's attacks, say they will not release the hostages until the government frees a defected army officer and stops the prolonged military siege on Homs. A video released by the FSA fighters purports to show five of captured Iranians and their identity cards, which allegedly reveal that they are part of Iran's security forces. The defected troops say the other two hostages were civilians. The video appears to show the hostages admitting to operating as snipers targeting civilians under the direct supervision of Syria's Air Force Security unit. The Syrian National Council, a leading opposition group, says the development helps confirm many reports from refugees fleeing the country's violence and from activists within Syria, that the Iranian government, a close ally of Damascus, has been logistically backing the 10-month crackdown that has claimed thousands of civilian lives across the country. But there are concerns over the veracity of the FSA's claims that the five hostages are actually soldiers. According to a report by Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston, all the five names of the hostages appear to match the names ...

Syrian opposition activists claim that more than 60 people have been killed during the latest outbreak of violence. That is against a backdrop of the reported advance of armed Syrian anti-regime fighters towards the capital Damascus. The National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change, one of the leading opposition groups, remains adamant that foreign military intervention would make an already deteriorating situation even worse. This lack of unity among opposition factions has hampered the growing calls for direct UN involvement. Russia and China, however, remain firmly opposed to a resolution that would leave the door open to foreign military intervention.
