BBC Radio Derby named Sony "Station of the Year"

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhuanet) -- BBC Radio Derby has won the prestigious Sony Station of the Year award for the second time after 2007 at the annual ceremony held in London, media reported Wednesday.

The award was one of a number won by both local and national BBC stations at The Sony Radio Academy awards -- the most highly regarded awards ceremony in the industry.

"The range and depth of the output is outstanding. Programmes and presentation are confident and warm and reach out to listeners," judges said.

"The news stories are strong and very well delivered - with big issues tackled from a local perspective with a range of voices," they added.

Simon Cornes, BBC Radio Derby's editor, said: "This is for everyone connected with the station in whatever capacity. It's also for the listeners who are such a part of everything we do.

"We were very fortunate enough to win this award three years ago - to win it for a second time really is very special indeed."

BBC Radio Derby is only the second station to have won the award twice and the first BBC local radio station to have been awarded the Gold more than once.
