Australian gov't making efforts to pass Emission Trading Scheme

by Cao Yang

ADELAIDE, Australia, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Australia has recently held a largest ever Clean Energy Conference in South Australia's state capital, Adelaide. More than 700 environmental and energy experts attended the meeting.

The Australian Government proposed the bill on climate change with Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) being the core, in last August and December which were both rejected. Analysts believe that this meeting is another effort from the Australian government attempting to pass the bill.

The government initiated enhancing communication with the industry in hope for supports from the industry for its ETS. However, the conference, like many others of the kind resulted in nothing.

Since the motion was unveiled, there has been much controversy in different sectors in Australia, which is still going on. This is the reason why the government feels need to make extra efforts with the industry. In this clean energy conference, Australia's largest gas and electricity company AGL Chief Executive Michael Fraser urges to pass the amendment of the bill.

He said if the amendment is not passed, it is likely to lead to a higher unemployment rate, causing serious impacts on foreign investments.
