Senegal holds anti-Israeli protest, burn Israeli flags

DAKAR, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of rights activists, academics, students and religious leaders in Senegal on Friday held a mass anti-Israel protest in the capital of Dakar.

The march which started at Dakar's main mosque was to show solidarity with the Palestinians and to protest against Israeli attack on Gaza aid, Flotilla.

Protesters held banners and placards with statements such as "Freedom for Palestine", "Enough is enough". They also chanted anti-Israel songs and called on the Muslim world to 'retaliate for the deliberate murder by Israel.

The protesters called on the Senegalese authorities to sever diplomatic relationship with Israel and close down the Israeli embassy "as soon as possible."

Senegal is one of the few predominantly-Muslim states to maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. Israel has been playing a key role in enhancing Senegal's agricultural sector mainly through aid.

In 2008, head of the Mouride Brotherhood, the largest Islamic sect in Senegal, called on the Senegalese government to deport the Israeli ambassador in the country following Israeli attack on Gaza.

In a separate protest in Dakar, dozens of students and pro- Palestine activists in Senegal assembled outside the Israeli embassy in Dakar to express their anger at the Flotilla attack.

They chanted anti-Israeli songs and called Israel "a nation of criminals and murderers" amidst heavy security in the area.

None of the embassy staff came out to meet the protesters and None of them agreed to talk to the media.

The Israeli forces on Monday attacked the aid ships when trying to stop the flotilla from reaching Gaza, killing at least 10 and wounding more than 30 others.
