Samsung Electronics to introduce first smartphone based on Bada operating system in Europe

SEOUL, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea' s largest mobile handset maker, said Monday that it will release the first smartphone based on its "Bada" operating system in Europe this week.

The smartphone named "Wave" will first debut in European countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as Samsung plans to also expand its application store "Samsung Apps" to more than 80 countries worldwide, the South Korean company said in a statement.

Samsung developed its own Bada platform for smartphones late last year in an effort to compete in the global smartphone industry against the likes of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and Research in Motion's Blackberry, both of which run on its own mobile operating systems.

Samsung accounted for 20.6 percent of the global mobile handset market in the first quarter, ranking second in the world after Finland's Nokia Corp., but its global market share for smartphones was a mediocre 3.3 percent in 2009, trailing four other handset makers, according to local media Yonhap.
