Grenade blast kills 1, injures 5 in Burundi

BUJUMBURA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and five others seriously injured in a grenade blast that occurred Monday night in a bar in Bwiza, a suburb of Burundi's capital Bujumbura.

The head of Bwiza urban commune Sadick Ciza told Xinhua on Tuesday that the blast was carried out by a person who was aboard a motorcycle. He left the bomb some 20 meters away from the bar with the motorcycle rider.

"The criminal arrived by 10:00 p.m. local time at the bar and fired the grenade in the middle of the people who were taking drinks in the bar," Ciza told Xinhua.

"It's a terrorism act because the bar is frequented by all people no matter which political parties they belong to," he said.

After firing the grenade, the suspect joined the motorcycle and fled, Ciza said, adding that he is yet to be arrested.

The bar attendant was killed, he said.

"Security measures had been taken and explained to owners of bars, restaurants and theatres were many people meet, but the owner of the bar attacked on Monday night did not follow the instructions," Ciza said.
