147 people are reported to have been killed by floods and landslides in the Brazilian state of Rio-de-Janeiro. At least 50 houses were buried by a landslide, which recently hit Rio’s neighboring city of Niteroi. The local rescue service is searching for dozens of people missing, with the exact numbers still unknown. The Federal government decided to allocate budgetary funds for Rio-de-Janeiro to carry out large-scale clean-up operations. The worst rain storm in 44 years caused numerous destructive floods and landslides, which severely affected urban infrastructure facilities and the well-known Maracana stadium.
