Paige Miles, whose performance of Phil Collins' 'Against All Odds' drew strong criticism from all the judges (and votes for the worst performance of the whole season), was voted off 'Idol' Wednesday night and just missed making the group of Top 10 finalists who will be a part of the 'American Idol' summer tour.
Adding insult to injury: So bad was Miles' performance -- and all her performances since becoming a season 9 finalist -- that when it came time for her to sing in an effort to win Simon Cowell and company's Judges' Save vote, Cowell told her he wouldn't give her false hope ... it was already unanimous at the judges' table that Miles would definitely be leaving the competition.
The hour-long results show capped an 'Idol' week that started off with a puzzling theme change (from teen idols to the much more generic Billboard #1 hits), followed by one of the worst performance shows of the entire series and ended with a results episode that was surprising only in that it continued the dismal performances.
First up: The Top 11 group song, a cover of Wham's 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,' that was delivered complete with an Up With People vibe.
Side note: The contestants' fashion choices also continued to be headscratchers. Particularly awful tonight was Lee DeWyze, and his ensemble of jeans, a white tee and black leather jacket ... yes, he looked like The Fonz.
Next up, viewers were treated to another group performance -- via that weekly Ford ad/music video -- some awkward patter between host Ryan Seacrest and the contestants and, finally, the first two names in the night's bottom three: Paige and Tim Urban.
Urban's version of Queen's 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' had also failed to impress the judges, and, obviously, the voters, though the week's guest mentor, Miley Cyrus, would later tell Seacrest that she loved Tim's Zac Efron-y stage slide. So he's got that going for him.
Speaking of the guest mentor, Seacrest announced next week's -- Usher -- and next week's theme: R&B. Are you scared?
Cyrus then appeared front and center for a performance of her 'The Last Song' soundtrack tune 'When I Look at You,' and, well, she seemed to have learned a thing or two from pitchy Paige's Tuesday night warbling. The 'Hannah Montana' star did trade in her mentoring outfit (cut-off jeans) for a long white gown, but she also seemed to take a few notes from the 'Idol' gang's cheesy stage theatrics for her own tune.
Seacrest reminded us that the 'Idol Gives Back' special is a month away, and then headed back to the contestants to call out the third finalist to be dropped into the bottom three. Was it Didi Benami and her 'You're No Good' cover? No. Andrew Garcia and his California Raisins-ish 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine'? Nope. It's mini-McPhee Katie Stevens who earned a trip to the bottom three with her version of Fergie's 'Big Girls Don't Cry.'
Stevens got a break when Seacrest almost immediately informed her she was safe and sent her back to join the contestants who'll tour this summer.
Commercial break time, and it's 'The Last Song' ad, which again made us wonder: What kind of bet did Greg Kinnear -- you were an Oscar nominee, man! -- lose to find himself stuck in such a schmaltzy flick?
And on that note, we're back to 'Idol' and Disney stars Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas -- They're dating! Squeal! -- who performed their duet, 'Make a Wave.' (Why was that theme changed from teen idols again?) P.S. -- The song is even cheesier than the tunes 'Idol' winners have been forced to record. P.S.S. -- Unless you're in the tween demographic, this was easily the most fast-forward-able portion of tonight's program.
Finally, Seacrest sent Urban back to the contestant pool to round out this season's Top 10, and though Simon confirmed Miles' ouster and she made a few comments about how fun the show had been and how her voice and song choices had failed her, she followed her voted-off video package with a repeat performance of 'All Right Now.'
