Rio De Janeiro, Feb 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Rio carnival controversy came to an end when a family court judge ruled that a 7-year-old girl could be the Samba Queen. She is now allowed to perform the samba before a huge crowd, in her role as a Carnival drum corps queen.
Julia Lira is now all set to perform for the packed Sambadrome stadium, and her performance will also be seen on national television. Her father was very happy with the court ruling and he proclaimed that he knew that the justice would prevail. The Rio state agency for child protection also confirmed the ruling, and they were thoroughly disappointed with it. They said that they would appeal to the Justice Ministry.
“The decision sets a negative precedent that will have implications across Brazil,” said Carlos Nicodemos. He is the director of the Rio de Janeiro state Council for the Defense of Children and Adolescents and he had asked the court to bar Julia’s participation as the Samba Queen in the carnival. “She is my daughter, any father knows what I’m talking about,” Julia Lira’s father said in rebuking criticism. “No one wants to exploit their child. She does not need that and I don’t need that.”
