KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Several armed militants loyal to Taliban outfit raided a U.S. compound in Kunduz city the capital of Kunduz province in north Afghanistan Friday morning.
The attack triggered gun battle which lasted for several hours during which at least four persons including one Afghan police and three foreigners had been killed.
Locals said that suicide bombers entered a base of NATO-led troops early morning and one of them blew himself up and others opened fire inside the compound.
However, an official in Kunduz city the capital of Kunduz province said that suicide bombers entered a guest house of U.S. troops at 03:00 a.m. local time and started fighting.
Meantime, governor of Kunduz province Mohammad Omar in talks with Xinhua confirmed that Taliban attacked a guest house of U.S. troops in Kunduz city this morning.
"Taliban insurgents intruded a guest house of U.S. military in Kunduz city this morning and few of them have been killed," Omar told Xinhua.
Omar also said that one police constable was killed and a foreigner was injured outside the compound.
Helicopters of NATO-led troops began attacking the compound at 08:00 a.m. local time. Furthermore, Afghan troops from the ground attacked the compound.
On the other hand, a police officer Rahim Gul told Xinhua that four persons including an Afghan police and three foreigners were killed in the gun battle and bombardment.
Rahim Gul also said that the compound is the guest house of U. S. army and also serves as office for the U.S. aid agency DIA supported by United States International Development Agency (USAID) .
Gul also added that the situation is under control and all the attackers have been eliminated.
On the other hand, a Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in talks with media via telephone from undisclosed location said that six suicide bombers attacked a U.S. compound in Kunduz city this morning inflicting casualties to the troops.
This is the second Taliban attack on NATO base over the past three days. The militants on Wednesday stormed an airfield in Jalalabad the capital of Nangarhar province in east Afghanistan but security forces killed all the four attackers after an hour of gun battle.
