Thai protesters give in, call off protest, thanks to Thai army!

After the Thai army opened fire against the Thai Red Shirt protesters, the anti-government leaders surrendered and officially declared the end of their protests to stop more casualties. The announcement was made on Wednesday, the same day the Thai army penetrated the heavily barricaded emcampment in central Bangkok.

CNN and Wall Street Journal report that seven Red Shirt leaders went on stage addressing a crowd in Lumpini Park to declare their call off.

Protest leaders Natawut Saikua and Weng Tojirakarn said that the decision was to prevent further deaths and terror in the city. They said that they had done their best so far and wouldn’t go any further step as of now.

At least 37 people were killed since five days of rioting and open gunfire in upscale regions of Bangkok. Three foreign journalists were shot killing one (Italian) of them. 19 more were severely injured. Normal life in Bangkok had come to standstill and the terror paralyzed different sections of one of Southeast Asia’s strongest democracies.

As the Thai army was deployed on 19th May 2010, Wednesday, the force assaulted the protesters near their encampment and opened gunfire. The firing killed two protesters eventually leading the protesters to surrender.

As soon as the leaders declared their decision, there were shouts and screams from the protesters to show their shock. They threw grenades at the army killing one journalist. Furious protesters also tried to set fire to a shopping mall and shooed away the reporters and photographers who tried to take photographs.

It’s been a month since the Red Shirts have occupied 1-square-mile (3-square-kilometer) region at the heart of the city, disrupting life and damaging several upscale hotels and shopping malls.

Hope the surrender would bring back the situation to normal and peace would return in Bangkok!
