Clash at Afghan military base kills 7 insurgents, injures 5 NATO troops: ISAF

KABUL, May 19 (Xinhua) -- An on-going attack Wednesday on Bagram military base in Afghanistan have left seven Taliban insurgents killed and five service members with the NATO-led International Security Force (ISAF) injured.

A press release issued by the ISAF said rockets, small arms and grenades were used by the attackers during the engagement.

A building at the military base received minor damages, said the press release.

"We're always prepared to deal with attacks on our base, the response this morning was immediate," said Lt. Col. Clarence Counts, spokesman for the United States Combined Joint Task Force- 82 and ISAF's Regional Command East.

The U.S. force is currently occupies the base.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban insurgent group, earlier on Wednesday told Xinhua through telephone from an unidentified location that 20 Taliban suicide bombers Wednesday launched the attack on the Bagram military base, 50 km north of Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan.

Four of the attackers have exploded themselves at the military base.

Local media reported that the clash between the militants and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) started at around 05:00 a.m. local time and was going on at the moment.

The Bagram military base is operated by the United States Army combat group under the framework of the ISAF.

The detention center inside the military base holds some 800 Taliban and al-Qaida terror suspects.
