Brazilian opposition undecided on running mate of presidential candidate

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Who will be the running mate of the Brazilian opposition's presidential candidate is still a mystery, even as registration period will expire in 10 days.

Jose Serra, whose candidacy was confirmed by the opposition Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) in mid-June, has promised to announce his running mate by the end of the month.

But it is still unknown whether his running mate will be from his party or from an allied opposition party.

On Friday, Roberto Jefferson, head of the Brazilian Labor Party which is one of the PSDB's allied parties, disclosed via his Twitter account that PSDB Senator Alvaro Dias had been chosen as Serra's running mate.

But local newspaper O Estato de Sao Paulo reported that Serra was eyeing former Olympic swimmer Patricia Amorim, a member of PSDB who is chairing the Brazilian football club of Flamengo.

The presidential candidate for the ruling Workers' Party, former presidential chief of staff Dilma Rousseff has already announced her running mate, Michel Temer from the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party.

Also contesting the presidential race are minor opposition Green Party candidate Marina Silva and running mate Guilherme Leal.

This year's Brazilian presidential elections are slated for Oct. 3, in which voters will elect a new president, all 513 members of the Chamber of Deputies, 54 of the 81 Senators, all 26 state governors and all the lawmakers of state legislatures.
