A spokesman for U2 has confirmed the band have cancelled the North American leg of their world tour after singer Bono underwent emergency back surgery in Munich last week.
'Clearly this is a serious injury and the recuperation time necessary to rehabilitate Bono is a big problem for the U2 tour and has unfortunately necessitated the postponement of 16 shows in North America,' Paul McGuinness, the band's manager, told Reuters.
McGuinness says Bono, who is expected to be laid up for eight weeks, 'feels awful' about the disruption to the tour, which is said to affect more than one million fans.
The band have also been forced to pull out of performing at England's Glastonbury Festival.
In a comment posted on the festival's website Bono said: 'I'm heartbroken ... We really wanted to be there to do something really special - we even wrote a song especially for the festival.'
