MIAMI - (AP) -- Hurricane Hilary is moving away from Mexico but is still churning up dangerous surf in the Pacific.
Hilary was a Category 4 storm late Saturday evening, with maximum sustained winds near 135 mph (217 kph). It was 685 miles (1102 kilometers) south-southeast of the southern tip of Baja, Calif., and moving west at 9 mph (14 kph).
The hurricane is not forecast to make landfall as it slowly weakens, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says Mexico's southwestern coast continues to be affected by wind, rain and heavy surf from Hilary. These swells are likely causing life-threatening surf and rip conditions.
