The Senate unanimously approved an extension of tariff exemption that benefits Brazilian exports and more than 131 countries, after the Supreme Court ordered the delivery of Sean to his father, American David Goldman, on Tuesday.

Last week, Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey (state of the same father of Sean), had filed a motion suspending the vote in retaliation for Brazil, because of the dispute over the custody of the boy.

On Thursday, after the Justice Department have determined the return of Sean's father, the minister of STF Marco Aurelio de Mello has accepted the application for habeas corpus filed by the Brazilian family of the boy and determined that the minor should be heard before the final decision.

The move postponed the return of Sean to the United States, since it could only be heard by the court in February after the end of recess.

But on Tuesday, the president of the STF, Gilmar Mendes, analyzed presented two warrants - one by the Attorney General's Office and another by the boy's father - and lifted the injunction de Mello, allowing the immediate return of Sean to the United States.

Mas na terça-feira, o presidente do STF, Gilmar Mendes, analisou dois mandados apresentados - um pela Advocacia Geral da União e outro pelo pai do menino - e cassou a liminar de Mello, permitindo a volta imediata de Sean para os Estados Unidos.

Depois de anunciada a última decisão do STF, o senador americano retirou sua oposição ao projeto.

O programa de isenção de impostos - conhecido como Sistema Geral de Preferências (SGP) - estende por um ano os benefícios tarifários ao comércio exterior dos Estados Unidos com 132 países, permitindo que eles exportem cerca de 3.400 produtos livres de impostos para os Estados Unidos.

Segundo a agência de notícias Associated Press, o Brasil é o quinto maior beneficiário do programa e teria economizado cerca de US$ 2,75 bilhões em isenções, no ano passado, segundo um porta-voz de Lautenberg.

Com a aprovação no Senado, agora cabe ao presidente Barack Obama assinar a medida.
