#dilma : Multibillion dollar biofuel deal threatens indigenous group in Brazil

Mon, 10/04/2010 - 13:48

In Brazil, many of the voters who propelled Dilma Rousseff into the lead for the presidential run off, note her strong ties to the country's popular two-term leader, Lula Da Silva. Rousseff served as Lula's chief of staff and his energy minister. And like Lula, who came to power from a background of poverty, she would be a groundbreaker. Rousseff would be the first woman president. This strong connection has served her well in the general election with voters who credit Lula with strengthening Brazil's economy and improving its international standing. But indigenous groups and activists have criticized the Lula administration at times. Now a multibillion-dollar deal between Shell International and a Brazilian biofuel company has sparked outrage. Critics say it threatens indigenous land and culture.
