Russia to help Uzbekistan accommodate refugees

MOSCOW, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Emergency Ministry to help Uzbekistan authorities in coping with the accommodation of the refugees from neighboring Kyrgyzstan, RIA Novosti news agency reported on Thursday.

"President Medvedev ordered the Emergency Ministry and the Foreign Ministry to provide humanitarian aid to Uzbekistan in taking and helping refugees who found themselves there due to the events in Kyrgyzstan," Russian Presidential Press Secretary Natalya Timakova said.

Violent clashes between Kyrgyz and Uzbek ethnic groups broke out in the town of Osh on June 11 and spread to the neighboring Jalal-abad region. The interim government introduced a state of emergency in the region. At least 187 people died and more than 1, 900 were injured in clashes.

Kyrgyzstan's interim government led by Roza Otunbayeva took power on April 7 amid violent protests. Ex-president Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled the country and later resigned
