RONNIE JAMES DIO Is Not Dead

Contrary to published reports, legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) **has not** died after a six-month battle with stomach cancer.

After rumors started circulating via the Internet late Saturday that Dio had lost his cancer fight, BLABBERMOUTH.NET reached out to Ronnie's wife/manager Wendy Dio, who sent back the following message at approximately 11:35 p.m. PST on Saturday, May 15 / 2:35 a.m. EST on Sunday, May 16:

"I am at the hospital and Ronnie has NOT passed away!!!! He is not doing
good, but he is not dead.

"I will let you know if anything changes.

"Thank you for your concern."

It was only a month ago that Dio, 67, spoke about his battle with cancer with the Artisan News Service on the "black carpet" of the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place on April 8 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. When asked about how he had been feeling since he was diagnosed with the disease late last year, Dio said, "Well, I feel good and bad at times. It's a long process. Chemotherapy is a... I never realized what a difficult thing it was to go through. It's a real cumulative effect — the more you have, the more it piles up on top and it takes longer and longer to get over it. I find it very difficult to eat. I don't like to eat anyway, so I guess that's OK. But I know I have to. But this makes it very, very hard. But if you're determined to beat it, then you have to go with what you believe is going to beat it for you, and in this case it's that. I go to a great hospital in Houston called M.D. Anderson, which I think is the best hospital in the world, I have the best doctor in the world, Dr. Ajani, who I really trust and I really believe in, so I think I've done all the right things. It makes me feel positive about my life and positive that there is a lot more of it to live."

Earlier this month, HEAVEN & HELL canceled its summer tour plans in Europe due to Dio's treatment for stomach cancer. The band said in a statement that Dio wasn't "well enough to tour this summer. We hope that everyone understands and want to thank fans and industry colleagues for their continuing support at this time."

Ronnie James Dio has performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects included the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He is currently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also included former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.

Ronnie James Dio es un cantante que alcanzó la fama y el reconocimiento por su esfuerzo y trabajo en grupos como Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath y DIO. Su inconfundible técnica, timbre y registro ha llevado a que muchos lo consideren la voz más emblemática de la historia del heavy metal. Dentro de los clásicos fundamentales de su discografía figuran Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975), Rising (1976) y Long Live Rock & Roll (1978) de su etapa en Rainbow; con Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981) y Dehumanizer (1992); y por último Holy Diver (1983) y The Last in Line (1984), junto a su propia banda DIO.

Historia [editar]

Nació en Portsmouth, New Hampshire, EEUU el 10 de julio de 1942, con el nombre de Ronald James Padavona. Dio sus primeros pasos en el rock and roll hacia 1956-57, cantando y tocando el bajo y la trompeta, en bandas como Red Caps y Ronnie and the Prophets. Durante la década de los sesenta, su música evolucionó del rock and roll cincuentero a un sonido con más influencias de Los Beatles, pero siempre con un toque Rythm & Blues. Hacia finales de los '60, su banda se convierte en The Elves, nombre que pronto mutaría a simplemente ELF. No es difícil entender por qué: Ronnie era el más alto del grupo, y eso que él apenas llega al metro sesenta de estatura.

Rainbow [editar]

En 1971, dos miembros del legendario grupo inglés Deep Purple -el batería Ian Paice y el bajista Roger Glover- vieron una actuación de Elf y quedaron tan impresionados que les ofrecieron producirlos. Así, en 1972 la banda sacó su primer disco, titulado simplemente Elf, y luego acompañó a Deep Purple en una gira por Europa y Norteamérica. Más tarde, durante una gira que realizaron como teloneros de Deep Purple, el guitarrista de estos últimos, Ritchie Blackmore, vio un gran potencial en este grupo, y decidió grabar un disco al margen de Deep Purple con los miembros de Elf llamado Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Al principio este grupo no iba a realizar giras ni conciertos, pero en 1976 Ritchie se separó de Deep Purple y decidió dedicarse en exclusiva a Rainbow, y entonces reclutó definitivamente a Ronnie James Dio. Aparte de Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow 1975, Dio grabó con Rainbow Rising 1976, On Stage 1977 y Long Live Rock and Roll 1978, discos que dejaron un gran número de himnos como Man on the Silver Mountain, Long Live Rock and Roll, Stargazer, Sixteen Century Greensleeves, entre otros. Después de la grabación de Long Live Rock and Roll, Ronnie James Dio dejó el grupo, que más tarde pasaría a ser más comercial con la llegada de Graham Bonnet y dejaría de lado la imaginería medieval que abundaba en los discos que realizaron juntos Blackmore y Dio.

Etapa en Black Sabbath [editar]

Nada más dejar Rainbow Ronnie James Dio entró como vocalista en una de las más grandes bandas de los '70 y que había definido a principios de esa década los cimientos de lo que más tarde se denominaría heavy metal. Esa banda era Black Sabbath. Dio reemplazó a un Ozzy Osbourne que entró en tratamientos de desintoxicación por su afición a la bebida y otras sustancias. En este momento Ozzy Osbourne dijo a Dio que se asegurase de llevar chaleco antibalas si se atrevía a cantar «Paranoid» e «Iron Man» en vivo, ya que sería el mismo Ozzy quien lo matara.

Al grupo se le presentaba la difícil tarea de intentar seguir en la brecha habiendo perdido a su cantante original, no obstante, Ronnie infundió sangre nueva en la banda para que dejase el hard rock setentero y se acercarse más al heavy metal que estaba de moda en los años 80. Con Ronnie, Black Sabbath grabó Heaven and Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981), el directo Live Evil (1982) y Dehumanizer (1992), dejando grandes temas como Children of the Sea, Die Young, Heaven and Hell.

Carrera como solista [editar]

Después de la edición del disco en directo, Ronnie James Dio abandonó definitivamente Black Sabbath (al que volvería fugazmente en 1992 para grabar Dehumanizer), para fundar su propio grupo, llamado Dio. Dio debutó en 1983 con Holy Diver, con éxitos como Stand Up and Shout, Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, Holy Diver... En la portada se veía a un demonio lanzando a un clérigo encadenado al mar. Dio siguió sacando grandes discos de Hard Rock y Heavy Metal durante los ochenta: The Last in Line (1984), Sacred Heart (1985), Intermission (1986) y Dream Evil (1987). Y en los noventa: Lock up the Wolves (1990), Strange Highways (1994), Angry Machines (1996) y el directo Inferno - Last in Live (1998).

Sus últimos discos de estudio han sido el conceptual Magica (2000), Killing the Dragon (2002) y Master of the Moon (2004). Durante su última gira grabó el directo Holy Diver Live (2006), disco que está presentando actualmente. Desde finales de los 70 fue él quien ha venido popularizando el popular signo del Heavy Metal, la corna o mano sacando cuernos.

Actualidad [editar]

Ronnie James Dio, a pesar de tener 69 años, sigue grabando discos, realizando giras y conciertos. Actualmente volvió reunirse con los antiguos miembros de Black Sabbath en Heaven and Hell y realizaron una gira mundial para el 2007/2008 donde pasaron por Europa, Asia, EE. UU., México y Sudamérica. En el 2006 tuvo una participación en la película Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny (Tenacious D: La Uña del Destino) de Jack Black y Kyle Gass, componentes del grupo Tenacious D.

En el año 2009 salió a la venta el nuevo disco de la formación de Heaven and Hell llamado The Devil You Know, este CD contiene diez canciones nuevas y será motivo para una gira mundial. El primer single de dicho album se llama "Bible Black".

Según su propia web oficial, Ronnie James Dio ha sido diagnosticado con un cáncer de estómago. Afortunadamente se ha detectado a tiempo y todavía la enfermedad se encuentra en las primeras fases, por lo que tampoco se ha extendido. Su mujer y representante, Wendy Dio, está siendo la encargada de informar a los medios de la situación de su marido. En el propio comunicado afirma: "Vamos a empezar el tratamiento de inmediato en la Clínica Mayo. Después de que mate al dragón, Ronnie volverá a los escenarios, a los que él pertenece y hará lo que más le gusta: actuar para sus fans”.
