CINCINNATI -- A freshman at Miami University has died of H1N1, according to published reports.
The Patriot Ledger was the first to report Healey's death. He contracted the virus 10 days after arriving at the Miami University campus for the start of his college education.Healey died Saturday. He was from Hingham, Massachusetts.Miami University confirmed Healey's death Sunday, but would not elaborate on whether H1N1 contributed to his death. In a statement posted Saturday night on the Miami University's Web site, Dean of Students Susan Mosley-Howard said, "The university extends its condolences and sympathy to his family and friends."
WCVB in Boston reported that friends and teachers at Thayer Academy, where Healey graduated this year, had planned a support ceremony for the freshman, but they learned of Healey's death shortly before the event."Many students, teachers and alumni were present, as well as many parents," Headmaster Ted Koskores wrote in an e-mail to alumni. "I am so thankful to all of them for the support they provided to one another.""There is no adequate explanation for this loss, and our own memories of how fully and how well Matt led his life only deepen further then pain we feel," Koskores wrote.Earlier this week, a Miami University graduate was said to have died from H1N1 flu. Kimi Young, 22, died Tuesday from viral pneumonia. The Toledo Blade reported Saturday that Young tested negative for the virus. Sunday would have been her 23rd birthday.
